I have been reading more about organic vegatables and wondered whether you all have or are considering buying any organics.

If you are in your 30's to 60's the non organic foods we buy now probably have less pesticide residue than in the past.  The sprays that are used are more targeted for specific pests and only sprayed when needed.  It costs farmers lots to spray and if they do not need to they won't.  It is also expensive to over spray so the quantity is better controlled now than in years past.
If you want to purchase organic then purchase the items that matter..thin skinned fruits and vegetables, things that you will not peel.  It does not make sense to buy an organic butternut squash if you are going to remove all of the hard thick skin.  Makes sense to buy organic berries, grapes and tomatoes.

The code on fruits and vegetables tell you if the produce is regular or organic.  If the first 2 digits in the code are 94 that indicates the item is organic.  I thought there was a code for genetically modified but I checked and there is no code for GM produce.

During the summer I pretty much rely only on my garden for fruit and veggies since I'm absolutely sure how they are grown.  During the non-growing season I tend to buy more frozen veggies.  Of course things like celery always taste better fresh but I can't justify paying two or three times as much for organic.  I worry more about the stuff coming in from other countries since we have no idea what kind of sprays they might be using.  I will very occasionally buy organic if the price is right and it looks better than the regular.

My boss & her sister are the original organics.  Her sister's been eating organic for years.  They say don't pay more for organic foods except milk.  If you have girls, organic milk is especially important or their boobs will group huge & develop way before the rest of their body

WHAT?  I have to share this one with my daughter in law as her parents only had everything organic.  I thought they were hippies or flower children or something.  I had to do the alterations on my daughter in laws wedding dress as she was a double J.  I had to put in extra panels and support to hold everything in place.  Put gussets in the back.  She complained that I made her put the sequins on her cathedral length veil that I made.  Then on the video that I demanded and paid for she said, & I quote; Oh look how beautiful the sequins sparkled.  I'm so glad I put them on my veil!  RIGHT   After giving me three wonderful grandchildren she is now down to a double D.  She  never had implants but ate organic foods never caned.  Go figure.

I do purchase some organics. Not as much as others do. I do find it more expensive, not really worth paying more for the"organic" nature.

I have, only, purchased organic celery and carrots.

I've bought carrots a couple times, as they were a better price than non organics.
I've also bought apples.

I do totally organic gardening and haven't bought a tomato or green pepper in so many years I don't remember when.  I freeze or can the tomatoes so never have to buy canned tomatoes, sauce or anything tomato.  I chop and freeze the peppers as I use them mostly in cooked stuff anyway.  I don't buy stuff from other countries, remembering the grape scare from Chile.

Buying organics is okay if you can afford them but, at over $4 a gallon for milk, no way! Also, how do we know that pesticides are not still in the soil from years ago or in the water or even being carried on the air? There is truly no way of knowing 100% if items are organic or not.

I raise a lot of my own foods and use sevin dust or green pepper tea on them. But, the city comes thru and sprays on a weekly basis to kill mosquitos and there is a water run off since our property is slightly lower than those behind us for many, many blocks so, who knows what is actually going in our food.

I do not buy organics unless they are the same price as the regular item. We are in our 60's & have a fixed income. I have a small garden every year & can, freeze or dehydrate some produce(I do not buy fertilizer for the garden so I guess I can call my produce organic).

Hi Wa-Ha K, I do agree with you we don't know what is in the soil, air or water. But this is great that you do grow a lot of your own food at least you have some control over what you are eating.Home grown is better than anything you find in the stores.

I've tried them but I don't see any difference in the taste. They are also much more expensive than the regular produce.

Even though they are supposed to be organic they don't taste anywhere as good as the stuff from my fathers garden.  No composte pile just old fashion know -how on growing your own.
