I don't know about you, but with Milk costing $4.19 (more than a gallon of gas), and eggs at almost $3.00 a dozen, I won't be doing much baking this season.  How long are eggs good for?

Evelyn, our milk is $3.19/gallon, and eggs are $1.49/dozen. I'm in California and usually we have the highest price on milk because of our state health guidelines.

I buy eggs in one store by me - their brand of 18 pack for $1.99 otherwise no eggs. Milk I get in 2 places...gallon is $3.59 or little extra in other store byt 10th one is free.  Most times I buy milk in other store so I get the 10th free milk.  If shopping in area, go to Sam's Club & buy their gallon milk 2 at a time.  Problem with their milk is the expiration date is close so more than 2 gallons is wasting money unless I'm making things that call for milk

I remember not too long ago you could get milk on sale for $1.69 a gallon.  Now that $1.69 might get you a half gallon on sale.

Evelyn, I have found that the lower the fat content of the milk, the longer it will last.  I bought fat-free milk last time and it lasted well past the date they had stamped on it.  Of course it probably also depends on how often your fridge is opened and closed everyday.   With eggs, I keep them on the bottom shelf of the fridge where it's always colder and they keep well after the expiration dates as well.

Baking for the holidays, with all the prices going up every week, will be a challenge I'm sure.

I've always used the float test to see if an egg is still good.  Put the egg in a cup of water, if it floats - not good -  if it sinks to the bottom, -still good to use.

Yeah, here I am in the Dairy State and our milk is over 4 dollars a gallon, unless my local store has a really good coupon, which they do on occasion, but then you have to also buy five dollars worth of non-coupon items.  I bought some farm eggs for $3.50 - delicious, but not something I can do on a regular basis...
