GRANA  here; A regional senior newspaper here; warns of participating in internet surveys ( may lead to identity theft  or  worse) Financial theft from your bank account is made possible once you’ve given your SS# & bank acct ( “for depositing your winnings or small payment for your participation in the survey” )
Never give your SS# over the internet (or telephone)
The    IRS   states that it does not (ever) request  your  ID ( SS#; bank acct  # by email.
So does our  bank &  internet  provider!!
Another method of gaining your pivate info is to cal( "from your doctor's office")
" When you were in recently, we neglected to obtain your SS #; please help us out & provide it now!" As we get older we tend to go more often/regularly to see different doctors so this is a seemingly possible scenario.
When got such a call,I requested the name of the doctor.I was asked if I had "forgotten" which octor I had recently seen? I requested that they send the request to me w/ a post paid self ddressed envelope or me to provide the #.I never got the request in the mail.I called the one doctor I had seen in the past several weks( slow time of year) & they stated that" they had all the needed ID #'s & "would never call to request them from a patient".
As older Americans wewereraisedto bepolite& helpful; The scam artists are counting on that. Our firstobligation isto protect ourselves;not provide personal information to strangers over the internet  or  phone.
Haveyou experienced this type of attempt at gaining yourpersonal information.

Even the folks @ Social Security will never ask for your SS# over the phone. There are so many scams out there.About six months ago I was contacted by an Army Sargent on facebook he said he liked my profile and thought we had a lot in common.I'm on facebook only because my niece's want ot share with me on there. No one can see my profile, only my friends.Well right away I went on the internet to see if people were impersonating military personnel and I found out they were. These men who are NOT MILITARY PERSONNEL,were even using pictures of these people to gain the trust of women, sending them flowers and even phone calls professing their undying love for them and then would start asking these women for money. Some women were taken for thousands of dollars and even had to have psychiatric care because of the problems of finding out these guys didn't exist and did not love them.During these times of ours how many women could ignore a request of a soldier in Iraq ?These people were corresponding from some where in Nigeria. As I said these were not Military personnel,no one from the military would contact someone in this manner.I told my husband and his response was he's probably lonely, even he bought into this .Ladies beware! I'm a firm believer in If it seems too good to be true it probably is!

I had a new credit card and was told that I had overdrawn on the card and they would need more info to fix it. This was done through my computer. I hadn't used it yet. Being suspicious, I called the credit card company to find out that this was a scam. Yes, we all need to be careful. Thes scammers don't just pick on retirees or old people, but the young can be fooled too. My husband also has gotten some e-mails regarding winning money and requesting his bank acct. number. Vigilance is the key word. If you don't know what it is about, the e-mailer is unfamiliar, etc. Delete it!!!

Hi Millie B.....It sounds as though we are dealing with the same company.  I have been doing surveys from them since back in '02.  I still have all of my check stubs!  I have tested lots of different products, and have never had a problem in all these years.  I love it when it is a product that I have been wanting to try anyway.  I'm waiting to winning one of the sweeps from them.  Maybe some day!

I never open any email that I don't knoe who it is from.
I hang up or don't answer the phone if I don't know them
from my id on the phone. Sometimes ther is no id and then if it is
someone I don't know I hang up.

I've done surveys for legit outfits and they will send a check.  Some of them give points that I can redeem for stuff.  I got a nice waterpik from one of them.  They never ask for personal info

I tested Cascade dishwasher "pillows" for one company and got hooked on using them.  I buy them whenever they are on sale and I have a coupon.  I love testing stuff.

It was a bit of a surprise but before Christmas I received a Text from Discover Card from Fraud Alert.  I ignored the text and called the number on the back of the card to find out if the text was legitimate. .  Turned out it was a Text from Discover. They verified the last 3 purchase I made and that was it.  I thanked them for being vigilant and wished the young lady a Merry Christmas.

Ah, the old "you're a winner" thing lol.  If I had a dollar for every email I've deleted telling me I won something(in a contest or sweepstakes I never entered) I would be close to rich.  Gotta love it when they tell you that they can't trust anybody but you to help them transfer money to the US too.  That one is getting really old.

The scams continue to flow every day.  All we can do is be on our guard and always triple-check everything!

I know of 3 people who have responded to phone requests from "insert relatives name" where they say they are in trouble or on vacation and need $3000 right away. All 3 of these people are mature and intelligent, and yet they fell for this scam and lost their money. One can never be too cautious.

I've received so many emails whereby I need to transfer money because I was the one they could trust, etc.  Always delete it.  Also received several phone calls about renewing magazines that were not due to be renewed and they wanted my credit card no.  Told them that they should send me the info in the mail.  Said they could not and it had to be done immediately or I wouldn't get the magazine any longer.  Told them that was fine with me and hung up on them.  They immediately called me back and I hung up again.  BTW I had two more years for the magazine before it expired.  Was not the magazine people calling.  It was a scam.

Millie, Darla, and Judy,  I have been doing surveys for years and have
never had a problem. I get checks in the mail and I earned a Brinkman
Smoker.  Hubby loves to smoke meat in it.
