I just came accross this article on obesity in our feline pets; It seems too common, these days( just likew/our.kids & ourselves. The amounts to feed & other  details /tips should hold true for canine pets too ; also often obese.
These tips should help w/ them too!!!

KITTY OBESITY

If so, your kitty might be one of the estimated 58% of cats that are overweight or obese in the United States. While it might seem like a harmless problem at first, in reality it’s not. Obesity puts cats at risk for many diseases and other health concerns
BTW dogs & puppies have simiar weight issues ; check w/your vet for specifics to help out

Health risks

Your little fatty doesn't seem sick. Why should you be concerned? It's just more to love, right? Wrong. Extra weight puts cats at risk for many serious health problems. Diabetes mellitus, arthritis, heart and respiratory disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, skin problems, some forms of cancer and a shorter life span are just some of the risk factors that come with feline obesity. But how do you know if your cat is overweight?
Ideal body weight

Ideal feline body weight , by breed

· Domestic cat: 8-10 lbs.· Persian: 7-12 lbs.
· Siamese: 5-10 lbs · Maine Coon: 10-25 lbs

HOW MUCH TO FEED/

When calculating how much to feed your cat, it's also important to use her ideal body weight as the metric, not her actual weight. Good luck getting your kitty to a healthy weight. And remember, a veterinarian is always a good first stop before you take the plunge into restructuring any pet's daily diet.

 When we rescued Maestro years ago he weighed 4.5#  &  was  finicky & extremely skinny  he weighed  only 4.5 #, though 3 yo. We took care of a few health issues( bad teeth; allergies & a sinus infection'; formulated a diet  he likes...He now weighs  just  about 8 # (nearly ideal) He eats his food w/ gusto  &  gladly   enjoys his hand fed snacks; given in moderation .
When we adopted Cali 4 years ago,  she weighed 19# was extremely  obese; compulsive & aggresive  about eating  looked like  she had swallowed a basketball, her belly was so distended!Frown.
We play w/ her &  formulated a diet she likes.She's down to 12#, more active; less  compulsive about food; also less obsessive about eating & much calmer & content.We hope both their lives wil be longer  due to their  being  closer to their ideal  weights&  living a healthier  lifestyle.Maestro is 10yo & runs jumps& plays like a kitten.
Cali is is 5 or 6yo  , now likes to cuddle; run jump& play & still enjoys  her cat naps, often in a lap  or wraped around my head.
My point is that helping your pet to lose weight&  obtain a more ideal weight is not mean.In the long run they will live a longer more enjoyable  life !CoolKiss

Our cat, Holly, is about 10 years old and was packing on the pounds.  The vet had her go on mostly wet food as we were just giving her dry food.  She weighed 14 pounds and is now down to 10 pounds.  She feels better and is more frisky, plus her belly is where it is supposed to be.

Just a reminder, an overweight pet, particularly cats, can indicate diabetes.  One of my adopted felines is diabetic and gets shots twice a day - and his weight has come down quite a bit.

Why do people insist on feeding their pets until they are a sausage in an animal skin. My friend was told repeatedly by the vet that her Labrador was to fat (115 lbs), but they insisted on giving him pancakes and eggs with bacon, leftovers from restarant visits along with a large can of dog food. The poor dog waddled when he walked and would sit by the table drooling onto the floor until he was given more food.

Dogs tend to put a little weight on after being spayed or neutered.Juliet is so active her weight is perfect.Romeo is a little chubby but by no means obese.We keep him active with daily long walks.I give them both treats but not too much.Once a week they both get a hard boiled egg.They get a few baby carrots which they love just about everyday.If I have just a little left over lean meat they get a couple bites of that.I have a food hopper filled with their dry food and they self feed,it is filled each week so they are just about right on with the amounts they should be eating daily.These two really love veggies.carrots,celery,cabbage and tomatoes.The vet said they are both very healthy and their coats are super shiny.None of my cats were fat.

A cat gaining weight can definitely be a problem.  It can be a sign of diabetes and should be checked out.  Three years ago I lost my cat, Jeff, because he was overweight and I didn't do enough to help him at the time.  I lost Jeff and still feel guilty about it.  Please have your cat checked by a vet if he/she has gained a lot of weight or is overweight.
