How high do they have to go for you to not buy them?

Oh boy, I use lots of pecans in my Christmas baking. And I give my baked goods as gifts. This will make them more valuable. lol

You know that as we get closer to the holidays, the prices on nuts and chocolate will definitely escalate.

In our area pecans were $50 00 for a 5 # box thru Extension Homemakers.

I use to give baked goods in nice baskets, small jewelry boxes, bakeware, even crockpots, but with prices going up & income staying the same, I might just give gift certificates along with a recipe Cry.

For some time now I've been buying a bag of nuts at almost every trip to the store.  I just toss them into the freezer.  I use such large amounts .............................
When I was making those chocolate peanut butter cookies that calls for 2 cups macadamias I thought about the chocolate chips costing $2.69, the nuts $5.98, the peanut butter a large amount, the cocoa isn't cheap ....... whoa.  I wonder how much that batch of cookies cost.  I wonder how much each cookie costs??

I am not surprised the price is going up on pecans.  It seems that everything is going up.

The price of all nuts has gone up super high.  Seems we have the wacky weather in the southern part ofthe country to blame for some of it.  However, last year's prices weren't too great either so this just makes it worse.

If this keeps up, we may all have to find some substitutes for baking.

Hi H.M.,My best friend is allergic to nuts and she puts unsalted sunflower seeds in some of her bakery. She brought over a pumpkin bread with sunflower seeds and I have to say it was very good. It's a shame the way the prices keep creeping up.

Some cookies - like Snickerdoodles - aren't good with nuts.  Nestles has that recipe for peanut butter//milk chocolate chip cookies that doesn't need nuts.  But cookies like that are few and far between.

There's great candied pecans ..... high priced treat.  They are nice just sprinkled over a tray of cookies.

Sugar 'n Spice Nuts

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup water

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp cinnamon

2 1/2 cup nuts -- pecans or walnuts.

(I use pecan halves)

Combine everything - except nuts - in large saucepan.

Cook over low heat to 236 - 240* (soft ball stage)

Pour in nuts and stir until creamy. Pile onto waxed

paper and separate clumps with two forks.

I read in last night's paper the price of pecans it up because of drought in the places where they are grown.  Harvest is way down from normal years.  I saw nuts in the store for $12 a pound.  Too much for me.  I shopped at our new Natural Grocers store yesterday and goe cashews for $6.99 a pound on sale.  Walnuts are $6.99 also.  I use a lot of walnuts.
