Sometimes when a hip is broken they put in a new one. I guess it depends on the situation. I think the healing goes faster when a new one is put in rather than trying to heal the broken one. Whatever he has to have done, I hope it turns out well. Hearing about older people breaking a hip is always a sad thing.
Nikki, you'll have to keep us posted on how he is doing. Hopefully he has a really good doctor.
The surgeon who is doing my hip has gotten rave reviews from everyone I've talked to.

No you did not mis-read that.
He went to get the paper this morning and slipped on the ice.
We had a bit of black ice on the drive, had I seen that it was icy I would not have let him go out until it had melted a bit or I had poured a bit of salt down.
He knows he fell, I guess that's good.
Will know tomorrow what the plan is.
I will let you all know
I know I don't need to ask but an extra prayer or two would do no harm.

I sure hope they can "fix" it for him. My Mom broke her arm (she had Alzhimers also) and she could not remember falling nor could she recall going to the Dr and x-rays, etc. Fortunately all she had to do was wear a sling for a while. They called it a "good" break. But every time she
tried to use her arm, she was surprised (again) that it hurt. It will be much harder if he needs hip replacement or even crutches. God Bless you with the additional strength and energy to deal with all that is to come.

oh no nikki, praying for you both

please be very aware of dr.'s        advice and check it out
i went thru that with my sister, who has huntington's   and after a week of nightmare pain and a QUACK that due to ins we had a problem unloading i had her moved to a nursing home for the therapy he said was all that was needed    and after six wks of therapy (useless)      the therapist recommended a new dr

we found a HIP & KNEE cllinic in ft worth     and even tho i had to drive almost 600 mile round trip for each appt we went and the x-ray from the first dr showed a separated break the 1st dr had said wasn't there
she had replacement surgery there and went back to the nursing home in 3 days and with-in 6 wks she was back on her feet

also he can get home care as well as nursing home benefits     you need to take full advantage of everything and alll the help available     because it's not going to be easy to handle him alone

Prayers for you, Nikki, and your husband. You need to take care of yourself too since you just had that foot problem. Nellie is right about taking advantage of any and all help you can get for your husband and yourself.

So sorry to hear about your husband, Nikki. My prayers are with both of you! I've been through a total hip replacement, so I'll make my prayers for him extra special. My prayers for you will be for patience and well-being. I sometimes think the spouse suffers more than the patient. Blessings on both!!

Dear Nikki, Please know that all good thoughts and prayers are headed your way. I have several friends who have been challenged by a dear one that had dementia/Alzheimer's, and I understand the circumstances in which you find yourself. My only advice is to take care of yourself too. Best wishes!!

He is currently at a VA hospital and the staff has been wonderful.
He is scheduled for surgery tomorrow and I am talking with a social worker to determine the best course of action after. They do have rehab and pt on site but very few beds. (And I am sure most are being used for current service persons.) But if he can stay there until he is more mobile that would be great.

I am doing well thank you.
I have my "boot" that I put on once I get to where I am going and that keeps me from doing too much too fast. I do like walking without it though as it makes me concentrate on walking on my foot properly and not riding over to the outside of my foot.
Driving is not a problem it is the long walks when I am trying to rush.
I am trying to do my best to not over do it I know that if I hurt myself I am no good to him. That keeps me focused on behaving myself.
