try not to overdo   because it can harm your health too and you must maintain that for his benefit as well

I found out that although the size is right for him the L/XL pull up "diaper" leaks.  Returned to Sam's Club and got the XL and it seems to be better but I got the leak proof pads to put under him.  I have done laundry every day since he got home.  Sheets and blankets not "real" clothes.
Last night he got up on his own several times to go to  the bathroom so my hopes are that he will make it through the night with no accidents.
It is good to have him home.
I am getting a better feel what it is like having to do more for him.  He really was pretty independent before the fall.  It might not be very long before I have to make the decision to place him where he will get better care.  I tried to give him a shower yesterday and I can't do it, either he will get hurt or I will.

It is easy to say "take care of yourself first" but it is difficult to do.

Thanks Nellie and to all of my other VBB friends that have helped me through these past 2 months. And I guess in reality these past few years.....All I can say is Alzheimer's  sucks!

Nikki, my daughter is a caregiver and she read your post. She mentioned that getting in-home care might help you to keep him at home for a longer time. She also feels for you as she has helped others with this. We both feel for you.

Nikki, One of my very good friends takes care of her mother in home.  She has an aide that comes out and bathes her mother twice a week, and she has a nurse that comes every week for one morning.  It really helps her.  However, she does have trouble leaving her mother home alone, just to go to the store, so that is a problem.  It is really hard having to deal with this 24/7.  So, that is why we all say take care of yourself!!!

I also have friends that have dealt with the Alzheimers with their husbands.  There will come a time when you will know that you can't handle it alone anymore.  In one case their children, said "that's enough". I hope that you will have family support to help you and back your decisions.  In the meantime please know that we support you, and feel for you and the tough decisions that you have to make.

i know that you don't have medicare , but the military stuff
but isn't there any benefit at all for a bather or pt person at least 2 or 3 times a week  it can help a lot, i know
when my knee was all bandaged up i was allowed a bather 3 x weekly and an aide to change the bandage

i don't know what your shower is like,  but i have the x-large w/ 2 seats  and 2 glass sliding doors and i was so scared of falling
my son came by and just re-moved the doors off the track       put up a tension rod and shower curtain
and it changed my attitude  i was scared of falling thru the doors    it's staying that way
my sisters had huntingtons  i describe it as like a mix of parkinson's and alzheimers

the one had hip replacement almost 3 yrs ago now    and i was her caregiver for surgery, dr visits and everything else  and she was in the nursing home where our oldest sister works 160 mi from me so i KNOW all about it  she was on her feet pretty fast   and walkking on her own after about 3 months      she also chose a surgeon and dr in ft worth another 150 mis past the nursing home
part of her condition makes her almost beligerant mostly   and she hasn't spoken to me since i refused to let her move in w/ me        my health is not that good and she has a daughter that  she's been living with

if you can't get any assistance from ins, possibly a church or the people at the day care could give you some ideas about help

We are getting a nurse in once a week to follow up after his discharge from Rehab.
A physical therapist will also be in once or twice a week.
This is through Medicare. And will continue for a while.( He has Medicare)
I have put in a call to the VA and he needs to see the Dr. before they can change his status from "independent" to needing more help.
So I am having people come in and follow up.  I was asked if I would like someone to come in and help bathe him.  I said yes to that and good thing to because I tried to give him a shower the other day and it did not go well.  Without help he will more likely hurt me or himself and I don't want that to happen to either of us.

There is an organization called Faith in Action that I can call upon to have someone watch him for a short time. They are wonderful and I have used them so I can get to my support group meeting.
I have a bunch of Dr appointments lined up next week so I figure he can return to Day Care by the end of the month.  It will get him back into a regular routine.

Again thanks for all your help, suggestions and ideas.
I also hope these conversations help anyone that may be reading these but is hesitant to join in.

when i needed the attendants personally it was a friday     dr day off    21 staples in my rt knee  and one of those velcro type splints that went from hip to ankle,  ( remember i'm only 5' tall and that thing must have been made for a six footer)  and a bandage that had to be changed daily

i found out that if you call the service you want  yourself        they will take over  and contact dr for you   and it works out faster       i had a nurse visit on sunday morn  and a bather on monday, because they could reach the dr when i couldn't

i thought you had said a while back that he didn't have medicare  , maybe someone else

We had been using VA as primary but when he was released from the hospital the VA Dr. can not go to the Rehab/nursing home so we used the Medicare as primary.  With the Medicare the services they provide can not be duplicated by the VA so for now we are using Medicare still as primary.  He will most likely be discharged from the PT and Nurse visits soon as he is pretty much back to his previous level of activity.  I think the VA is actually listed as secondary and Medicare as primary.

Oh, I had a brilliant idea today.
I went to a fabric store and got 6 yards of "rubber sheeting"
Got it home cut it in half and that should prevent leaks from hitting the sheets.  I did get the disposable pads but for the price of 1 box of them I got 2 reusable pads that I can wash each day.

good for you
that's what we used to use
i also bought a large plastic sheet and cut it in 1/4 to use under some of my towels while dressing my wound            even though the nursing  service provided everything needed on medicare's tab

The large clear plastic that you can get from fabric stores or even the heavy weight clear shower liners I have used for pounding out meat.  I cut a piece about 2 foot square and a few drops of water or olive oil, place the chicken breast or what have you on the plastic fold it over and pound away.  Heavier duty than plastic wrap or bags and re usable, I just toss it in the wash and hang to dry.  Also good for rolling dough. And I have a piece that I lay across my cookbook so the pages don't get splattered.

Glad to hear things are improving for you both.I made a clear plastic round table cloth from a heavy duty shower curtain to protect my beautiful hand embroidered table cloth from Hungary.

Speaking of recipes here is another way to keep recipe cards clean and easier to read.Clip your recipe on a single clip hanger and hang it on your kitchen cabinet door knob.My niece shared this tip with me along with a few of these clips.I just thought I would mention this because I thought it was a great tip.
