New Year's Eve is a feast. Depending on # of people, depending on what food's set up during the night. Most of us are in bed by 1:30/mostly after midnight cleaning up. New Year's Day is bagels/rolls for breakfast or whenever the drunkards wake then a nice ham, baked ziti for late lunch/early supper or if the night before's drinking effects their day, we get Chinese food

We have no traditions for New Years but would like to have creamed herring.

Nancy, Creamed herring would be an appetizer!!! hee hee We had ham for
Christmas but I still haven't decided what we will have for New Years!! There
is a chance that New Year's Eve that we would go to New East Buffett. It is an
awesome Chinese restaurant. My stepson and grandson have gone with us to
this restaurant and my daughter-in-law wants to go. Hubby usually has 4 dinner
plates of food and the 5th is a dinner plate of desserts!! hee hee lol lol He is
still thin and he has never had to worry about his weight. It's disgusting! lol lol

A tradition we practice is to say "rabbit" the very first thing when you awake on the 1st of January. It is supposed to bring good luck. We also try to say "rabbit" on the first day of each month. Remember this, you can't say anything else before you say "rabbit". It is always a fun thing for kids to see if they remember. I believe it may be connected to an English custom, but I think they said "White Rabbit" If anyone has any information on this custom, I'd be interested to hear about it. I had a roommate in college that started me on the tradition, and I passed it on to my kids, and now my grandkids do it too.

I have made home made manicotti for years on New Year's Day. Just a tradition we started. However, since I just got out of the hospital again, I won't be making them this year.

Thanks, Gale, for the information. I printed it out to show my kids that there really is a tradition, and I didn't just make it up. Now we can say "Black Rabbit and White Rabbit" as well as "Tibbar" ( Rabbit backwards) if we forget to say it.

Not crazy about creamed herring either, but the one in wine isn't bad. You just have to love onions since they put a lot of them in there.

I'm afraid if I say "rabbit" too much at the start of the year the little rodents will all be camping out in my garden all year lol.

Thanks for sharing that Marie,just about every nationality and culture have a special thing to eat or some type of ritual.In Hungary a straw figure is carried around the town and then burned this is supposed to get rid of all the bad from the past year and start out fresh for the New Year.Now we all know this isn't true but it is a tradition,this post was just for interest and fun.The day you are born is your Birthday,but in Hungary they have name days and the day or days of the year that bear your are also celebrated.I like that idea! MORE CAKE!!!

No - and I don't want to. One time long ago I tasted some kind of herring in a glass jar. eeewwwwwww That tasted worse than the first lobster I ever tasted.
