New Years Traditions and Superstitions

In Hungary,It is lucky if your first visitor of the New Year is a man.Eating pork and cabbage signifies good luck the pig always roots forward with his snout which signifies progress or moving forward.Eating cabbage signifies money,green like money.If you know some of your nationality's traditions or superstitions list them here. I think it would be fun and interesting.

Both my mom and my mother in law had to have ham.  Mom served blackeye peas and my mother in law always had cabbage.
I like it all.
Mom always observed the weather on the first twelve days of the year.  Any variation off the norm was supposed to be a portent of what that month would bring.  Example;  unusually warm sixth day = hot June, unusually cool eighth day = cool August etc.  I have vever remembered to really track it to see if it works (probably not)

My Mom always ate black eyed peas.  I like the tradition of eating "round things" at midnight better.   Donuts and grapes are two examples.  My worst problem is staying up until midnight!  LOL

The Chinese & otherAsians believe in payng off all financial debts from the previous year &starting off the new year w/ a clean slate; Many Western religions require making right all wrongs done to others  in the past year; again starting off the new year w/ a clean slate.I  can see  the benifit  in doing either or both!

The only tradition in my family for New Year's Day is when the children or grandchildren come to visit and give wishes for the new year, they usually get money( usually a dollar or two).  My mother has carried on this tradition that she grew up with in Yugoslavia.  Of course it's hard to do it when they just call instead of visiting lol.

My husband's family is Danish and they always served pickled herring for New Year's Eve.  My mother-in-law once told me that it should be lutefisk but since that was hard to find here they switched to the herring.  Eating herring at the stroke of midnight was supposed to bring good luck in the new year.  Gee, I better get to the store to buy that herring lol.

My Mom and Dad would always eat creamed herring on New Years Eve even though we were not Danish, but I just couldn't!

I now try to make Posole which in New Mexico where my daught lived is traditional. Here in FL I think it is black eyed peas since they sell a lot in the store at this time.

H. M. -  I lived in North Dakota for several years and the New Year's tradition there was Yell  lutefisk.   Oh uuuuggggggghhhhh

I remember my husband's mother and my mother always served sauerkraut on New Year's Day.  I remember my Scotch-Irish grandmother shaking her pocketbook at midnight hoping it would bring financial fortune in the New Year.  I usually serve sauerkraut and pork,  since my husband enjoys the tradition.

With all the New Years items we are "supposed" to eat to bring luck and good fortune we will waddle our way into the new year.
Nancy, I was just telling my grandson about the "famous or infamous" Lutefisk.  I brought the info up on the computer and we both cringed when we got to the description of the taste and texture..."Fish flavored jello".
There was a funny explination that half the Norwegians that left Norway did so to escape Lutefisk, the other half left to spread the joy of Lutefisk. Not a great "introduction" to this dish. But I think I will pass on it.

I love black eyed peas, but I am the only one in the house that does.  So I only have them when I see them on a menu.
I do like pickled herring, cream sauce or vinegar is good.
Pork is supposed to bring luck and fortune.

No matter the traditions be it food or shaking your purse, hanging money above a door or any other cultural idiosyncrasy I wish all my friends here a very Happy, Healthy New Year.  One filled with great recipes and chocolate kisses.Kiss

I'm not sure why; but before I was married, my Mother always made some sort of pork dish which consisted of pork, sauerkraut, and chopped cabbage.  It was good, so when I married, I just kept the "tradition".  My Father was German, and my Mother was "Pennsylvania Dutch".  Maybe that's where it all came from.  Anyway, it will be on the table Monday!
