I posted this in Shared Stories but it is so good it is worth posting again...

I found this in the Chicago Tribune in May of 1985...(that's what a move and clearing out boxes will unearth)

The following was written by an unidentified soldier who died in Vietnam:
Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there,
I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow, I am a diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of birds circling in flight;
I am the stars that shine at night.
So do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there.  I did not die.

Let us think about this as we celebrate the Memorial Day weekend, lighting the grills and enjoying Monday off.
If  you have lost a member of your family in service to our country we offer a heartfelt thank you.

Thank you Nikki for thinking of those who gave their lives so that we may have the freedom that we have in America. We should all try to remember at least one military personnel who gave their life for their country. Fly your flag high and proudly for those who have served our great country. Thanks agaain Nikki!

Thank you Nikki, that is a beautiful poem, and It comes at a time when our whole town is grieving.  A lovely young girl (age 15) from our area become so distraught that she jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge last Monday.  She and her family are very close to my daughter and her family.  My grandson thought of her as one of his best friends ( not romantic, just friends).  They were on the same swim team, and between events would sit together and work on MENSA problems.  They spoke the same language.  He is devastated by this and I will pass the poem on to him.

Nikki,  What an awesome poem! It sent shivers thru my body.  We always fly the American
flag everyday! On these kind of holidays we also fly a trio of American flags in a holder
attached to the side of our house. When I lived in MI and was a leader in Cub Scouts and
Boy Scouts, we always marched in the parade and afterwards the boys would put flags on
all the veteran's graves in the cemetery.

Barbara, I feel so bad reading about this.  I have to wonder what can possibly be so bad that a child/young adult feels that this is the answer to a problem.  The town not far from where I live now and next to the town I used to live in had several high school kids walk in front of trains. It leaves me in pain when I hear that this happens.
My thoughts and prayers for your grandson and his friends. I do hope they all have someone to talk to. And they realize that this is not the answer to any problem. Problems seem so much more out of control when you have little control over your own life.

Why do our young people feel so much despair that they feel the only answer is to commit suicide? I will pray for this young girl and her family. What a tragedy.  Here is a prayer that I find comforting:

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless, and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments, we might not despair, nor become despondent, but with great confidence, submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy Itself. Amen.

Thanks to all of you who send condolences.  I just found out yesterday that my grandson has been asked to speak at the memorial service ( they may never find a body...very sad).  That is a daunting challenge for a 17 year old, but I am sure he is up to the task.  I e-mailed the poem to my daughter and asked her to pass it on to him.  Time heals, but she will not be forgotten.

Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the American military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer. In 2011, Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 30.
