Nicki, I wish it was as easy as your husband had.  The dermatologist already took off most of the mole, but they believe that it may be deeper than what she took off, so first they have to inject me with a radioactive isotope, to see where the spot on my forehead "drains".  Then the general surgeon goes in and finds the lymph nodes that may have received any of the malignancy.  That takes about 2 hours.  Then the plastic surgeon, goes in where the melanoma was and searches about 2 centimeters around the spot and has that biopsied.  He then has to bring everything together so I look somewhat normal.  He told me he was very good at that.  ( ego or confidence?)  That also takes another 2 hours.  A couple weeks later I go to the oncologist to get the results as to whether I will need Chemo or radiation.  We are hoping that most will be clear, but will not know until they get in there.  So, all good thoughts are welcome.  Thanks to all the wonderful members of VBB.
I must mention that we are very lucky to have an excellent hospital close to us as well as resources of both University of California, San Francisco, and Stanford University.

University!!  There is no medical care on earth like the sort we get at our universities with a medical education.   When I had to have that ~shudder~ oligodendroglioma II tumor removed from my left temporal lobe I went to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis -- that's part of Washington University ..... a really, really good hospital.
Barbara --- I'm so happy to hear what care you are getting.  Thank God!!

The "spot" my husband had was about the size of a dollar coin, if anyone remembers the old $1.00 coins.  He had it for a couple of years and the Dr just kept saying "it's nothing" I pushed to get a referral to a dermatologist about something else and as soon as he walked into the room he asked how long the Melanoma had bee there. I just knew it wasn't "just nothing".   Always trust your gut feelings.
I am glad you are in good hands and I hope and pray all goes well.

GRANA here;
Now that nicer weather is here; we are more likely to spend more time outside in the sunshine or getting tans inside tanning booths to look nice on vacation.
The following is more info  on SKIN CANCER  to help more people prevent it in the first place:
If you spot new spots: Beauty marks can be beautiful, but sometimes they can be deadly. Irregular moles can: be a sign of skin cancer and any new birthmarks or brown spot should be checked out immediately, says The Skin Cancer Foundation. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt!

Melanoma is a dark-pigmented, usually malignant tumor arising from a skin cell capable of making the pigment melanin (a melanocyte).

Non-melanoma skin cancer most often originates from the external skin surface as a squamous cell carcinoma or a basal cell carcinoma.

If any of you have more info to  share in this battle against this  preventable  &  curable condition; please provide it  here
thanxKiss

All the years I spent "basking" in the sun....Some of that with baby oil on to increase the tan.
I have to say I am not one to put sun block on even now. I should get in the habit but I don't even think about it.
I think young children now are more apt to put on sun block than we were at that age.   I hope my Grandchildren have fewer skin problems when they get to "our" age than we do.

Just to keep you up to date on my melanoma,  I had surgery on Friday, and was in the hospital overnight.  I look kind of like something from outer space.  I have this tube coming out of my forehead....sort of like the "Borgs" on Star Trek.  It will come out soon, but we are waiting for the plastic surgeon who is on vacation.  ( he is one of the best, so he is worth waiting for)  I also had my hair line shaved back, so I look like I have a receding hair line.  I have bandages on both sides of my face, as they took lymph glands from both sides.  So I look pretty scary right now.  Luckily  hair grows back, and the forehead will be fixed soon.  I really feel pretty good, but I have to carry this machine around that is attached to my forehead.  It tends to limit my activity, so my husband has really stepped up and is doing all sorts of things around the house.  No report on the lymph glands yet as that takes 5-6 days to analyze.  Ann is right!!!  Take care of your skin and avoid the sun.

Congratulations on beating cancer Nellie.  Barbara, love your great attitude.  So glad this is all but over for you.  Please let us know how you're doing, once the tube is out and the forehead is finally stitched closed.  Praying for a great recovery.

Barbara, I do hope all goes well.
Just curious...what is the tube for?  I know in some areas they place a tube to help remove fluids that collect but I can't imagine that there is an excess of fluids in the forehead.  I had one in my abdomen when I had gallbladder surgery...way back in the "dark ages" before they started doing them  by laparoscope.
I will say a prayer and keep my fingers crossed for GOOD news on the lymph nodes.
And here is hoping that your plastic surgeon comes back well rested and ready to do a great job.

I have an appointment with the dermatologist next week for her to look at a brown spot on my cheek bone.  It is probably nothing, lbut one never knows.  Probably an "age" spot, but it has an irregular shape.

Nicki, the tube is over the hole in my forehead, they want to keep it open until the plastic surgeon can close it with his magic, and they also want to keep it open to assure the biopsy is OK.  They decided to use the wound vac to keep it in tact.  Otherwise, they would have had to do a skin graft, and then perhaps the plastic surgeon would have had to do another skin graft. I would have had holes in both my hips.  It seemed like the best solution to both doctors, and who am I to argue with them.

Went back to the surgeon today, and he took off the dressings on both sides of my face.  I feel a little more normal, but I still have the vac in my forehead.  I even was able to put my pierced ear rings back in.  Now I go back on Friday.

The surgeon was pretty happy with how I am healing, so I guess that is good, and is hopeful that the biopsy will be back by Friday.

My daughter in law bought me a big floppy hat which works as the perfect camouflage.  The hat plus dark glasses seems to make me more presentable and also gives me an air of mystery!!  LOL

Judy, good idea to have that spot checked out early!!  I already have another appointment with my dermatologist in August....just to make sure nothing else has popped out!!

Everyone seems to be dealing with some kinds of medical issues.  It can be tough.  My husband has Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and our son has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. We try to stay strong and pray for ourselves and others facing challenging issues.  God bless us all.
