The best gift is just being with the people that I love and care about.Everyone is healthy and happy the rest all falls into place.When the boys were little we collected Beanie Babies and the boys bought one of the holiday bears and my husband put an emerald necklace on the bear to surprise me the boys were so excited for me to find it.

The best gift I think, is to have everyone here and healthy. However the second best gift I have ever received was a picture of all five of my grandchildren together. I still keep that on my wall even though it was taken in 2001. Now the 1 year old is 10.....so I keep hinting that another would be nice. The two older boys will be going to college next fall...so its a perfect time to do it again. Hint Hint

This is a very funny question. Thinking about it I remember some gifts but to classify them as "The Best Gift" I think there were other times I received better gifts than ones I got at Christmas.
I remember as a kid I got a pair of skates but it was the way I got them that made the gift so memorable. First I have to say I lived in a house with a pond in the back and I loved to skate in the winter, I can't skate well but I wanted to skate like the other kids. I thought a good new pair would help me skate better. I told Santa that I wanted a new pair of skates. I NEVER told my parents. Christmas morning after all the gifts were opened and no skates I was a little sad to say the least. I was sitting having breakfast with my Dad and he reached under the counter and handed me a box. I opened it and there were my skates. He told me with a grin they were from Santa....That is when I found out that He was Santa. He told me later that where I had told Santa I wanted the skates there were microphones so parents could hear what the kids told Santa.

As an adult I find more joy in looking for "the best gift" to give someone else. To see a look of pure joy in a child's face or the smile a friend gives you when you give them something that you have found just for them is priceless.

WIth all the health problems I had in the past year, having my family close and enjoying a wonderful, peaceful holiday, sharing the cooking with my wonderful daughter, sharing stories and rememberances while my son and husband did the cleaning up was the most precious gift I can imagine. So far as physical gifts are concerned, one of my all time favorites was a one hundred dollar gift card to Penzeys Spices - enough to last me almost a whole year of spluging! (Their double strength vanilla is THE BEST!)

Penzeys Spice catalogs are the best. I made a cake that I found in the catalog, one of the best cakes. It is the Harvest Peach Cake. It is so difficult to find good peaches and when I get some that are not great I make this cake and it makes the peaches taste so much better.
There is a Penzeys store not that far from me I should stop in sometime and see what they have. Although it might be a hazardous place to go...for my wallet.

I would have to agree with Erica. With my two knee replacements and my husband's MS, the best present was my sons doing the shopping and cooking for the holidays and all the cleaning up afterwards. I also had some help from my two brothers.

Also, most importantly the gift of the birth of our Lord.

Mmm - Harvest Peach Cake...I saw that recipe and saved it, but have not made it yet. I should, though - I love anything with peaches in it! I can even convince myself that it is healthy and okay to eat with diabetes, because of the fruit factor! :D

And Marie, thank you for the reminder about the birthday of baby Jesus - we wouldn't have Christmas to celebrate if it weren't for Him!

Trust me on this....There are just a few cakes that I make that are not Chocolate. The Cranberry Almond and the Harvest Peach Cake are so very good.
When I see peaches in the market I am never sure if they are going to be good or not. Most of the time they are not juicy, sort of flavorless and sometimes a bit mealy. Turning these into a cake brings out the flavor.

I remember as a kid going to Florida every summer and stopping in Georgia at road side stands to buy bags of peaches. They were always juicy. Smaller than the ones we get in the stores now. And the Peach fuzz would stick in your chin and get a bit itchy. OH but to have peaches like that again.....

Nikki, this past summer was a wonderful one for peaches...we go th the farmers market every week, and one of the growers also had peaches from Georgia - they were the best! Juicy, and so much flavor. You're right - the ones at the grocery store are just NOT the same. No flavor, no juice running down your chin. Oh, thanks a lot, girl - now I want a peach! :)
