In Response to Re: How are the grocery prices in your area?:
AWFUL!!!!! I just checked all the ads for this week. One store has Hamburger Helper for $ 1.00, too bad the hamburger is $ 3.49#. I do not buy hamburger, but I feel sorry for people who want to make the Hamburger Helper to save money. I sure am lucky that hubby will eat planned overs. I think it is terrible that the gov. tells us we are over weight & need to lose weight, but they do not do anything about the prices. How do they expect a family to eat healthy with such high prices???? A head of lettuce (the size of a grapefruit) is $ 1.19, the leaf lettuce is a lot more, apples are on sale 3# for $ 2.97, celery is almost $ 3.00, I saw green peppers were on sale last week, $ 1.00 EACH, the colored ones were more (red, yellow & orange) how are parents suppose to feed their kids healthy food? I sure am glad we are empty nester & that we have the space for a garden (even if it is not very large). One cashier at the grocery store told me she is buying a small chest freezer for her apartment, she will have to keep it in the bedroom, but she said it is the only way she can save on her grocery bill.

Hi Fran I agree with you 100%,it costs a lot to eat healthy.I have fruits and vegetables always available in my house. My son has been buying all my produce items and I buy the rest.He spends about $25 a week on the produce. These prices are better at our Marc's store here in N.E. Ohio and the produce is of higher quality than the larger chain store.I manage by buying fresh meat on sale only and cooking our meals from scratch,I use very little convenience foods, very little lunch meats more chicken ,turkey, meatloaf ,roast beef and tuna. It's a shame what they charge for everything.Years ago I remember seeing things like the Government paying Farmers not to produce food, to keep the prices higher. The cost of fuel hasn't help with the grocery prices either but I still don't think they need to double the prices to keep up with the fuel increases. When milk is on sale I buy a few gallons and freeze them. You are right it is awful.
