While gardening this afternoon, I found a tomato growing on one of my plants, and the potatoes are pushing through the surface!

I don't have any tomatoes yet. We have had a lot of green onions and radishes.

Well, we finally got some much needed rain here and the garden is doing great.  Potato plants are so high I'll have to go out there and put in some supports for them.  Tomato plants aren't very big but loaded with blooms.  I think I might have missed digging some out last year since we have some where none were planted this year.

Of course, with all the rain and the recent heat wave, the weeds are also growing like crazy.  That will be this weekend's project, getting rid of the little suckers lol.

I saw a very interesting way to plant potatoes.  I think it was on a Martha Stewart show.
He dug the trench for the potatoes put them in the ground then filled with a bit of straw.  As the plant grew she continued to lay straw around the plant base.
Because the plant stem is "hairy" like the tomato all the little hairs become roots and will produce more potatoes.  When she wanted potatoes she reached into the straw and "plucked" some out.  All in all they were easier to dig because you were digging through straw rather than hard dirt.  (even if it does not work well all that straw should improve your garden for next year.)

I planted potatoes once they were good but digging them was a pain. (did that before I saw the above method). I just thought the potato bugs were gross and couldn't stand picking them off the plants.

Our container plants continue to do well.  The trick is to keep them watered.

The ground water table is almost normal. The temperature is in the 80's however we are receiving rain. All of this helps the plants.

Tomato plants have been in the ground almost 3 weeks, & today I found 2 plants that had a pea size tomato (that is really early) and 5 other plants have at least 1 blossom.  I guess the 3 days of 90+ helped alot. Hubby is proud since he planted from seed & this is only his 2nd. year doing most of the gardening.  I was a little upset that he "weeded" out my grape tomatoes that popped up from last year.  I put stakes out by the dill so he would not pull any, at least he knows what the onions look like.  The parsley & chives are safe since I have them in pots.  The peppermint is doing good (got rid of the spearmint yrs. ago) & I still have onions to plant (like to do a little at a time, but need to plant before they dry out).

The deer pruned my peppers because they couldn't get to the beans.  I double fenced the beans because I know what those creatures would do to them.
