This so sad.  No wonder things are expensive as the loss for shop lifting gets passed on to those of us who pay for our things.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for people that steal things - especially cigarettes.  But for the lady who needed food, there should be a way to help them that does not embarrass or confuse them .  Plus it needs to be something that will come to them - like Meals on Wheels.  That is a fantastic program.   The homeless are a different catagory - they need transportation too.

I never had to deal with the stealing because of Alzhiemers.  My Mom had it and she would not have realized that the things had to be paid for.  But fortunately she was at an Adult Day Care during the day.  So if she "took" anything we could simply return it the next day.  She was not able to even walk around a store to shop as she got worse.  I certainly think that store security should be able to recognize the fact that a person is not able to make good decisions if they are ill.

In Response to Re: "FIVEFINGER DISCOUNT"; WHATDO YOU THINK? : Nikki,    Oh my!!!  I had never thought of that.....my husband is in the early stages of Alzheimer's.  I will certainly keep the frisking in mind for future use.  Right now, he doesn't go in the store with me.....he enjoys to just sit and "people watch".  I'm not sure what all I should be looking for as his condition progresses.  It must be very hard on the spouse.  My sister-in-law has Alzheimer's....very advanced.....but my brother has never clued me in on what to expect.  He lives in CA, so we just talk via the internet and of course, the telephone.  He is so good to his wife.  I hope I can be the same when my time comes.  Thanks for the info that you mentioned.

Darla, I hope you are involved in a support group.  It does help. When I started attending my thought was..well I have it easy my husband is not that advanced...well it does not take long to go from mild to moderate to advanced.
The groups do help if for no other reason than to let you know you are not alone and there is help.  If you ever need to talk or "vent" send me a message through VBB and we can exchange emails if you would like.
It does help if you can talk to someone that is in the same situation not someone that has a friend or neighbor or grandparent or some other non resident person.  Life does change when you are living day to day with someone with Alzheimer's.
Take care.Wink

When I worked at the store I had to take a loss prevention class.Nine out of ten people caught shop lifting have the money on them to pay for what they have stolen. Why do they do it? For the thrill and excitement of getting away with it.One women that was caught had smoked sausage stuffed in her pants all the way around her waist in her pants, she wore a loose fitting shirt to hide it.She was trying to be somewhat "Honest" she was stopped just before leaving the store after checking out and paying for some of the items.Another women had an elaborate sling she wore between her legs covered by her dress, she was caught trying to walk (Waddle) out of the store with a turkey between her legs.lol ! The stores do know what goes on,but then they have to be careful when accusing a person of shop lifting they have to keep their eyes on the person 100% of the time to make sure the person doesn't dump the item or items being shop lifted before leaving the store or they could be sued by the shop lifter for being wrongly accused. There are other ways the stores loose money, people try to pass counterfeit bills, short change artist and those who fake injuries in the stores and then sue.During the holidays and other busy times I worked the front end watching to make sure things were being rung up,some people liked to "forget" items on the bottom of the carts. We as consumers can help by reporting things we see to store management.A word of warning, while you are out shopping be aware that there are those out there just waiting to steal from you.Ladies watch your purses,if able don't carry one and carry only a minimal amount of cash.About 10 Years ago my oldest boy was working and was robbed at gun point, luckily he and his co- worker were not harmed other than being scared.Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.
