Can you stand the interest and excitement? I like my little Sears canister (it's my second one) but after being in the repair shop for almost 3 weeks I tried to use it today and it quit.  I

Nope, never work - the pets would be uncomfortable.

Elsa, there is a post on Utube where a cat rides around the room on a robot vac, and everytime he comes near the dog he swipes at him.  it is hilarious

Maryann -- I would really appreciate any details about the Rainbow.
What do you do with the water? How much water?  Is it difficult to carry around? And details like that please.

Is there such a thing?  LOL  We have a Sears canister vacuum that was purchased to replace an old Sears canister vacuum.  My husband thinks they make the very best ones, I however have my doubts.  The thing I like the best is that the bag is sealed and can just be tossed (saves my allergies from acting up too much).

For light cleaning and doing stairs I got a small Dirt Devil upright that converts to a hand-held.  Much easier to use than dragging the big one around.  It also works well on the wood floor in the kitchen and hallway.

Nancy, I have a rainbow vac and I really do love it. But, it is awkward and heavy. I have had it since the early 80s and have had to replace the brush in the head. Don't know why, I only used it 3-4 times a week in 6 rooms!! LOL!

It has a powerful suction and gets down deep in the carpet. It has several attachments that work great also. I don't like having to remove the "seperator" and clean it but, that is part of its excellent suction and does have to be done. That part simply unscrews from the bottom of the main vacumn system and looks like a mini strainer. There is a brush supplied to clean it off.

The water goes in a seperate, deep basin (about 2" of water) and the basin sits in a wheeled holder. Then the main section of the vacumn sits on top of the basin and two "snaps" hold it down firmly. Once you vacumn, you empty the basin and I found that outdoors is the best since carpet fibers, etc. will stop up your sewer system if you are not careful. I dumped the water off of the back porch for a couple of years in area where nothing would grow and it began to have gorgeous green grass!!  Once that begin to grow, I took it farther out and emptied it. The fibers and junk will build up and my husband would pick up the gunk with a shovel about twice a year and dump it in the trash. But, you can empty it into a flowerbed and it works like mulch.

The rainbow isn't just a vacumn cleaner either. There is a carpet shampooer that can be attached and it works like a leaf blower and it can be used to freshen the air in the house. There is a fantastic product that they sell that you can add to fresh water and turn it on in blower mode and it will freshen the air up great. You can take the hose from the suction port and put it on the exhaust port and use it as a blower to dry up damp/wet floors, blow off leaves, etc. I clean the floor fans and heaters out with it after taking them outside. It also comes with a LONG cord!

There are drawbacks to it. You cannot vacumn up water or liquids, it is heavy and a bit awkward and if you ever tilt it over, well, you just have to empty the basin, set it on old towels or newspapers and hope it dries out real fast since you can't use it until it does or it will start bouncing all over the floor and spewing water out of the exhaust!!

My Dad bought one of those robot vacs... it didn't work very well.  I hate ALL vaccuums, myself.  But I own a Sears cannister.  It worked fine for me, but husband managed to break it.  So he is using an older one he had (from before we were married).  I don't use that one at all.

I had a Rainbow for about 25 years.  My Darling Husband left water in the basin several times and eventually the moisture damaged the motor.  The cost to replace the motor was about the same as a new machine.  I got a new Sears Kenmore HEPA vac.  I like that one.  The one I have now has a sensor that lets you know if the carpet is clean.  Great when you are sucking up dog and cat hair.  I did like the Rainbow and for 25 years use you can't complain about that.
I think the only vac that I ever had that I did not like was an Oreck.

Glad you brought up about the Oreck.  I was going to get one but it looked cheap but was not.  It was light and I was worried that it wouldn't hold up so I got the hepa sears upright but I sill would love a new vacuum.

Don't own one.Ceramic tile and hardwood floors.

Gale...

That is what my husband and I are trying to do.  I have severe allergies and the Allergist told me to start removing my carpet and put nothing down but tile or hardwood floors.  Half my house is carpet and the other half is tile and hardwood floor.  So we are saving money trying to get a room done at a time.  I also had to cover my bed mattresses and pillow case in a special plastic because of my allergies.  Very costly!

I have a Hoover Preferred vacuum cleaner. My husband uses it , as he is my housekeeper.  We are retired and he says he wants to help in some way.  Nice, eh?

Absolutely incredible ..... my new Dyson started having trouble ... the suction was as powerful as ever in the hose, but the head wasn't working and the part that is supposed to spin - wasn't.
I called Dyson thinking I would have to mail the darn thing in and wait for it to be repaired and sent back to me.  The kind, pleasant, gentle woman I talked to and answered questions about the vac said she was writing out an order while we talked so I should get my new head within 5 days!!
Can you believe that?
I am thrilled!
