I printed your post out to show hubby that I am not strange . I have several boxes from the store(soup was in them, they are about 1 in deep) if I want to put something in the back, I just pull out a little & then push back. It also makes it easier if I want to defrost.I just pull the boxes out, put in the ice chest & when done, just slide the boxes back in. The freezer bags stand up in the boxes neatly.
In Response to Re: Expiration Dates:
Gale, thanks for the link to that site. I keep a couple of lined notebook papers on the freezer w/items on it listed w/the date they went in. I have a small ink pen w/a magnet on it that stays on the freezer and can mark off stuff I use or add things I stick in there. And, I date my packages too. I even shrink wrap/vacumn wrap things that are already in a package. I simply punch a hole in the original package and put it into the vacumn envelope and seal it up tight. I also split stuff up for feeding 2 people and some for 4 people since the grandkids are here a lot. And the packages are marked as such. I have a dedicated shelf in my big freezer for "quick fix" items. These are left overs or things that can be microwaved or fixed really fast. I also divided the other shelves up using thick, cardboard. There are cubby holes for poultry, pork & beef. Fish goes in the door or in w/poultry. The 2nd shelf has stuff from last year, the 3rd is this year, the 4th odds and ends such as cakes, bread, ice cream, etc. The baskets are vegetables. Makes it so much easier. I have two refrigerators w/filled freezers too. I garden and can or freeze a lot of items.
