In Response to Re: ENTHUSIASM; needs a steady diet to remain active & healthy : A while back, actually quite a while back, I mentioned that I was making a quilt.  I am enthusiastically posting a copy of that greater than king-sized quilt at the request of one of our baking community.  Sorry it has taken me so long to get around to this post, but it took me all of the Summer and Fall to finish the quilt.  I kind of got lazy on those hot summer days and headed off to the boardwalk at the beach! I know this isn't a cooking topic, but I hope you enjoy seeing my second quilt.

Bakery 1 G,that is just beautiful !!!! I have a crib size quilt that my paternal Grandma made for me when I was a baby.I treasure that it is all hand made,it's over 50 years old and it still looks like new.

In Response to Re: ENTHUSIASM; needs a steady diet to remain active & healthy i once had a neighbor scold me for sitting on a quilt in my yard----------she said that whoever made that quilt would be very upset if they knew i was using it that way----------------my grandmother would be upset with me if i didn't use them any way i needed------for that was why she made them

I feel that quilts that our grandmothers made were made to be used - not folded away in a cedar chest or hung on a quilt rack or wall.
I took my grandmothers quilts camping before quilts became such heirlooms or artistic expression.  When I became aware of the "value" I felt a bit guilty, but then I realised she had made them to keep her family warm and comfortable.  She probably would have been pleased we were having fun and staying warm with her quilts.

I find it fascinating that so many of our grandmother's were quilters. My grandmother made baby quilts for all 22 of her grandchildren, and when we turned 16, she made another quilt for all of us. I was using the 16-year old quilt until I accidentally dropped a tea bag on it and stained it. I had it cleaned but the stain did not come out, so I put it in storage. And you are all correct - Grandma would prefer to know that I was enjoying the quilt, stain or no stain. She was a life-long quilter, had 2 quilting frames set up in her basement, and hosted 8 women each week as they socialized, ate and hand-stitched their quilts. The majority of their quilts were donated to a mission; others were given to charities and organizations to raffle for fundraisers. Truly stitches of love.

Gale,  I'm never bored either.  I love my computer too.  I have learned so much but
there is so much more to learn.  My stepson used to collect dream catchers until he
got married. I haven't seen them since.  We have a lot of Indian tribes around here
so there is no shortage of dream catchers.  They really make some awesome ones!!

I try to make mine as natural as possible,I have one I made with our parrots feathers,a Severe Macaw,we no longer have him.We were unable to handle him so I gave him to a breeder.I still have that dream catcher.I have made several for Hunters using turkey and Pheasant feathers from the birds they had gotten. Those were all four sided dream catchers.

It's funny when I was still working everything seemed to get done. Now that I'm home I don't have enough hours in a day.

Gale,
I agree with you. 24 hours isn't enough or do we just tire more quickly?

the value only comes in if you want to sell them------------and who could sell granny's quilts?
a couple of the ones i have are over 60 yrs old and still very useable-----my mother  once took some of the older ones and sewed them into sleeping bags for my dad, son and nephew for their hunting camp use.-------they enjoyed them because they vere very soft and kept them warm on their camp-outs

My grandmother made me a quilt when I went off to college.  It was cold in north central Maine so it came in handy.  Later when I got married she made me a double sized one.   Probably 30 years ago my aunt made each of us girls a queen sized quilt, all by hand.  I have always used them for their intended purpose.

Gale, I, too, enjoy using the computer.  I've used it to find numerous substitutes when I need something that can be created just by knowing what to combine to make that ingredient.  Not sure I'm making sense, but I remember finding a way to make self-rising flour, substitues for some herbs and a half dozen other substitutes.

I stay enthused with the computer by keeping tabs on the children and the grands.  Following them via Facebook brings them closer, despite the many miles between us.  It is an encouragement.

Following the folks on this websight is an encouragement, since I glean so many great recipes and good advice.  Thank you all.

we did it because we had to

but i've noticed that since i've retired that it's very easy to procrastinate on things , because we can do it tomorrow-----and i'm engrossed in a book------puzzles---------baking---------face book---or nestles vbb right now or on my exercise bike (i really am doing at least 40 mins aday again)------or a friend called and wants to talk or do something------------and since we're retired our family and friends ask us to run errands for them ---------pick up the grands from school-------take them to docs, dentists-----shopping----------teach them to drive---i've done 3 so far and 1 grandson and 2 grandnephews  and of course take them to the dmv for their papers and the actual license once its all done and they reach their 16th b.d.----------and don't forget the casinos on occassion

actually it's a wonder we find time to sleep

I enjoy using the computer and going on this web site with all of you.  I also use it to find out a lot of information when needed.  The days go by very quickly, especially with my husband having the MS, he can't do a lot of things.  Also, recently being hospitalized twice recently because of the AFib.  This Saturday into Sunday, they have scheduled me for a sleep test to see if I have sleep apnea.  My family dr. seems to think that might play a part in my AFib.  These dr. visits, hospital stays and tests are eating into my time to do things!!!!!  I guess it is for my own good, though.  Between all this, I try to get as much done each day as I can.  There is soooo much to do and to learn and to accomplish.

I try to look at the bright side of life as much as I can - the glass as half full rather than half empty.
