Encountering a Celebrity

Have you ever encountered a celebrity of any kind? Being born and raised in Southern California, it was not unusual to
see a celebrity from time to time. However, there are 3 stories that stand out in my memory. The first was actually my mother's encounter. After I graduated from high school and my sister was married, my parents decided to sell the old large home and move to a smaller beach house they had in Newport Beach, CA. One day my mother was shopping in an upscale grocery store near their home and as she came around the corner pushing her cart, she ran right into John Wayne pushing his cart. He was very nice though and gave her a business card from his shirt pocket with his autograph.
The second story is my husband and I were on a tour in Ireland. We stopped at Blarney Castle. There was a large store there with all things Irish and as we were walking around we walked by Ed Asner. How strange to see him in Ireland!!
The third story happened a couple of weeks ago. My husband and I were in Target on a regular shopping day , and all of a sudden we saw a Target employee leading a man and a young girl across the aisle. We did a double take, but it was no mistake the gentleman was Capt. Sully Sullenberger who landed his plane in the Hudson River. ( Yes, he does live in our town, and neighborhood) We thought it strange that he could land his plane in the Hudson, but he couldn't find the paper towels at Target.

One time when I was living on
Vandenberg AFB in CA, I got shake hands with Rin Tin Tin.

Gosh Gale, the only celebrity animal kind I have ever seen was Shamu at Sea World, but I didn't get to shake his "fin" so you are way ahead of me!!

Well, where I live there isn't any celebrities. I did run into Charles Barkley at a Kenny Roger Christmas Show! Oh I will never forget this, for my Sweet 16 Birthday gift from my Mom and Dad, I got to see Frankie Valie and the 4 Seasons. I snuck behind stage and I met him in person. Gee...I thought that was the neatest thing! lol

MY name was mentioned on Romper Room one day. Since I have a pretty unusual name I was sure the "I see...Nikki" was just for me. Could have been anybody with the name Nikki by any spelling or any nick name but as far as I was concerned it was for me.

I also went to a taping of a show, "Boom Town" (I lived in New England at the time) I was never so disappointed in my life. The show was nothing like it was on TV. There was no real town, no buildings, a floor rather than a dusty street. I had no idea what I expected but I do know I was saddened to find that Boom Town did not exist.

Oh -- what a memory.... I remember winning a school board contest for my tiny school (all 8 grades in one room). The prize was a trip to the local radio station ....... I couldn't breathe. I KNEW that's where Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Bat Man -- ALL those famous people were.
When we drove to that tiny, one-room little my heart fell. When I learned that a radio station was just one usual man saying into a mike. "Here comes Roy. Let's all welcome Roy Rodgers", it meant nothing

When I was 13yo;I was inN.Y.C. fora dr appt. Afterwards;I went to FAO Schwartz( world famous toy store;( just to look around.A sales lady came over & whispered:" Frank Sinatra is over by the toy trains,if you'd like to see him."
I, out of curiosity, went over to toy trains & there he was;also Peter Lawford
They were each running a long set of trains around & up& down a mountain scene.Then they wento over to the cowboy area ;pickedup 6 shooters & had a western shootouteven pretending to be shot& falling down.It wasj ust like watching little boys playing cowboy.They ( cowboy area& celebrities ) were closer to me than anybody else& I got there frst I went overto Peter Lawford( who I had a crush on for several years)& requested his autograph. He was all alone; no other fans, nearby.They were all hounding Frank Sinatra.
Peter, tried to excuse himself to bring Frank Sinatra over to me.I told him I really only wantedhis ourautograph, not Mr.Sinatra's.Peter Lawford said" ofcourse you want Frank's autograph & went to bring him over to me. I had only my dr's appt. card & a pen for one autograph.
.When "Frank came over;I explained my lack of enough paper.They both took "scrap' paper from their coat pockets & gave me their autographs.Then they offered to walk me to the bus stop for my bus -ride home
Only as I was boarding the bus w/ their asistance; did I realize I take a subway train home & not a bus.I was so embarassed, but I had to get off the bus. I explained my confusion was caused by the excitement of meeting them.They then offered to escort me to the train stop several blocks away.I insisted "I would function better( clearer head) w/o their company.They laughed heartlily & said goodbye; like old friends.
when I got home;I framed both autographs & they became terasured posessions. foryears.
When I started dating my now husband of 48 years;I learned that he was a HUGE Frank Sinatra fan. Ihunted down a double record album( newest release back then) boughtit& wrapped it up w/ Frank's autograph, as a Birthday gift to my then new boyfriend.
He had trouble believing the autograph was real but was delighted w/ the record album ,which was so new he had not yet bought it for himself.
When we gotmarried a year later;The autograph was in our joint custody.
We llistened to and enjoyed that album for years; until phonographs became obsolete

Years, earlier, I met Howard/Howie Morris & Carl Reiner of the Sid Cesar tv show
( circa 1950's) in a NYC restaurant. They both seemed embarrassed to be recognized & yet were gracious; even though I was interupting their quick meal during a short "break" in the show.Growing up inNYC;I had many ops to meet celebreties: Jeannie Crane; (In theBroadway area) during an actor's strike. They were nearly all very gracious & made me fee like a celebrity.I metTheodore Bikel backstage after one of his concerts & LivingstonTaylor ( brother of James Taylor ) and a GREAT ENTERTAINER in his own right) after one of his concerts. I have always been more impressed by the kindness & good nature of the celebrities, than by the fact that they are
celebreties at all.I've met quite a few celebreties but never shook paws w/Rinnie( tin tin)

I never met Rin TinTin but, I did get to meet Benji! They filmed part of a movie here and used my neighbors restaurant and my daughter worked there. Also, have met Jamie Foxx who was a school mate of my daughters and we know him as Eric Bishop. His grandmother was in the nursing home where my daughter in law worked. And Chuck Norris was in our town for a while filming his Walker, Texas Ranger series. They blew up the old mill where I used to work and my brother was out there since he was a reserve Sheriffs Deputy. Norris even went on a raid with the Sheriffs Dept.

I used to do interviews with country & western singers. Was allowed on the bus with Moe Bandy and Joe Stamper, met Charlie Daniels, Shelly West and had an interview scheduled with George Jones but, he canceled his concert. I have a 2nd cousin who is a country & western singer and my husbands family included a very well known Washington Redskins former quarterback. And I met Charlie Prides brother and Louise Mandrell and her husband R.C. Bannon. I also have autographs from Olivia Newton John and John Travolta.

I also have met a few of the older Dallas Cowboys. I worked for a newspaper for several years.

We don't get too many "stars" in Virginia. They may come in to do a movie or even live in some areas of the state. But I never saw them. Or at least I didn't notice them if they were around me. They could be on every street corner. LOL

Hi Mary Jo, Two things, I do remember Walter Pidgeon and I, too, saw a star at O'Hare airport. This was back many years ago. Rosie Greer, the football player came walking by us in one of those stretch sports outfit. I want to tell you, there was a lot of material in that stretch suit. He was one big football player!

Mary Jo - I remember Walter Pidgeon.

I forgot that 40 + years ago I was on a TV ad shaking hands with Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond when he ran for Governor of Missouri. Yikes - Senator Bond is retiring.

Ann's post reminded me that I once "interviewed" Peter Tork from the Monkees. I was in high school he was at a local theater and a few of us went for the school paper. I think I was more excited to be away from school than doing the interview, I was in a boarding school at the time and we didn't get away much.
