We are in the generation of "ME".We all have to be more fiscally responsible,this includes our government.We can be a strong nation again if we all work at this.I truly believe this will happen but it will take time and a lot of hard work.

Many of our problems came from the banks not making responsible investments and since they were not regulated, they got away with it, and then we had to bail them out.  It isn't all about the leaders of the country, the present administration came into a mess with two wars and failures on Wall Street, and banks.  Things are slowly getting better,  but we are faced with the possible failures in Europe, which may affect us too.   I believe that there is much to blame in Congress as many elected reps do not believe in compromise.  It is an attitude of "my way or the highway".  I say VOTE, but realize that it isn't going to be a quick fix.  I also agree with Ann, we must be responsible i our own lives too!!

I find this very interesting:The idea that Social Security benefits could be seized to pay for student loan debt seems laughable, but the Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 made it possible. Social Security beneficiaries receive a $750 cushion, but up to 15% of funds above that line can be seized to pay down debts, including student loans. What's more, student loan debt has no expiration date and can't be discharged in bankruptcy, which means that graduates could, conceivably, have their retirement funds raided decades after they left school.

Of course, most student loans are paid off long before the recipient reaches old age. However, a recent report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York stated that almost a third of student loan debt is held by people aged 40 and over, and 4.2% -- roughly $42 billion -- is held by people over the age of 60. Some of this loan debt is the result of cosigning -- grandparents or other elder relatives helping family members borrow for college. But many loans were taken directly by this older students, a result of our nation's long-term employment problems. Thanks to the downturn, large numbers of older students have returned to school in search of degrees and certifications to help them escape the bleaker corners of today's job market.

I see how frustrated everyone is and it is a reflection of my feelings too. What happened to our country? Did we ignore the signs? Of course the rest of the world seems to be suffering too. I remember as a kid I thought,  that countries died after too much prosperity by becoming decadent and getting away from the true values would never happen to our country.
