A Sweet Scoop of History

At the turn of the century, pharmacies became the place to satisfy your sweet tooth. There, uniformed soda jerks would crank out egg creams, root beer floats, and hot fudge–laden sundaes. They were a place all generations gathered and everyone was happy. Sadly, many soda fountains and ice cream parlors have since closed, but thankfully a few good ones have survived.

Pay a visit to these heavenly sweet spots that have stood the test of time. They are certainly worth a road trip and will make you feel like a kid all over again.

Sign me up for any flavor (except savory i.e. garlic) and any kind of presentation be it cone, cup, sundae, malt, shake or float.  I'm ready to partake and promote ice cream!!!!!

I'm lactose intolerant, so I eat  frozen yogurt.  Can't always find too many flavors in the grocery store for frozen yogurt.  Will take any flavor!!!

I love them all!  My hips and thighs can attest to that lol.  My all-time favorite though is Spumoni which is getting harder to find all the time.  Walgreens used to carry it (in their house brand) in a pint but I haven't seen it in a long time.

As hot as it is today, the only way to keep the ice cream from running away is to put in a bowl and eat fast lol.  Sugar cones are great but not today.

I like vanilla the best.  But I would not turn down some hot fudge sauce.
I had a vanilla milkshake today - just because it was National Ice Cream Day.
Yeah - sure ..... I will eat ice cream ANY day!   I don't need a reason.  LOL

Before the days of home freezers, ice cream was a real treat.  About the only way to get it was at one of those wonderful ice cream parlors or the local pharmacy.
Or...Homemade in one of those hand cranked freezers with the cream container surounded by a mixture of ice and salt.  When we visited one particular cousin, the afternoon activity was ice cream (real cream).  Dad and his cousin would go to town to get a block of ice.  All the males took turns chipping with ice picks to get enough chipped ice to fill the wooden bucket which held the cream can and had the mechanism on top.  After it was all assembled each person who expected to have some had to take a turn at the crank.  I was one of the little ones.  Our turn was always early while turning the crank was easy.  As it got harder to turn, the older ones took over.  When it was declared ready, the paddle would be lifted and awarded to one lucky licker.  The rest of us had to wait while the can was packed down to finish.  Ohh yum, yum... that was the best.  Maybe it was the anticipation but it was also farm frean ingredients and the fact that we each worked to get it.

I agree with susan K about the hard ice cream.  I get a Kroger brand called Death by Chocolate that is the hardest ice cream ever.  I have a terrible time getting it out of the carton.  We like ours in cones.
I remember when I was 7 or 8, my aunt would take me to the next town, on the bus, to my piano lesson.  On the way home before we got on the bus, we would stop at one of those pharmacies and get a hot fudge sundae with nuts.

I love ice cream and I will eat just about any flavor except coffee flavors.  My favorite is mint chocolate chip and coconut.
