No Christmas shopping for me. I already gave a bit of cash to the garbage man and have the same for my wonderful mail carrier. I give cookies and candy to at least a couple dozen people.

GRANA  here; When did it become necessary to go into debt buying gifts for loved ones?
We used to put aside money each week in Christmas clubs through school & the bank, so we could buy gifts for those we wanted to  shower w/ expressions of our love.We would make candy & jelly, bake cookies;embroider  special hankies & table linens , for months to give to a special  person
. Times are tough &  going into debt( using credit cards) is risky, the job you have today might be gone when the bills come in.Thegift may break or be replaced by a newer version or may be a duplicate of another gift.
A gift certificate of a home cooked meal or special homemade dessert or clothing item is more valuable to me than a duplicaste sweater as one of my fellow teachers recieved.A much more treasured gift was that of a gift certificat to stay late or arrive early to help clean up the kitchen in my classroom
. It showed da genuine apreciation of what my job as their teacher required of me. A parent giving a gft of a standing offer to drive me to the airport to catch a fligh to  spend time w/ hubby on his out of town job site was more thoughful than any  purchased  gift  could have been.  A parent's  offer to clean our  pool or  repair  our retainng wall  was more valued than a leaher briefcase wuld have been. These people gave of themselves( their time & skills, thinking of how they could make things better for me.With the man ofthe house, serving verseas the chores he would normally do often remain  undone.
when did we begin to think that buying a gift in a store had more meaning or was of greater value than helping out a single mom by baby sitting so that she could do her grocery shopping or helping a chld w/ homework after school.
Is it that gifts from the heart no longer have vaue or is thinking how we can help another person too much effort? We were taught & hopefully taught our own kids to  be aware of what help we can offer others in our daily lives. Is that mindset out-dated?
Not only at Christmas, but all year long; Did giving an elderly/disabled or non driving neighbor  a ride to the grocery re lose its' value to be repaced by a purchased gift?
All year long thereare many things we could do for others to enrich their lives & let them know we value them as friends/neighbors/ relatives/people!

Do you feel that buying   A gift  in a store  is a better gift than letting a  neighbor know that someone cares about them enough to  to make their lives a little better/easier by  doing something for them that they really need thehelp to do. Walk a working or  ill neighbor's dog; pick up pet food for a senior neighbor or relative can help them to keep their beloved animal companion.

I have ordered a few things for my family - as I get older I find that shopping on line has it all over fighting the crazy people in the malls!  We have been cutting back on material gifts and concentrating more on spending time together doing things we enjoy.  My daugher and I spent yesterday afternoon at two museums here in town, and have a cooking-baking day planned.  Lovely! And being able to do these things without pain meds and a wheelchair or walker makes it even better - so grateful...last year I had doubts I would ever enjoy the holidays again!

I have 7 grandchildren ages 19.17,14,13, 4,2,1, I give a small gift and money to the 4 oldest ones and
gifts to the 3 smallest ones. I have 3 children and we don't exchange gifts. It is alright with me to just
be together for a meal and watch the kids open their gifts. The true meeting of Christmas is not all the
gifts you can get.I am so blessed that all my family gets along and are close enought the get together
for the holidays.

Started early and got a lot done.  Much was purchased through catalogs and the Hallmark store.  Not buying that much.  We try to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

Except for my oldest son, my Christmas shopping is completed. As with others, I give homemade candies and baked goods to many friends and family members. For my siblings, I contribute to our local Food Pantry, in their names. (I also volunteer at this Food Pantry, and I know my donation is being put to good use!) For our parents we give restaurant gift cards, to encourage them to leave the house occasionally! My husband and I have never felt the need to buy each other gifts. If one of us needs something around Christmas, we'll count that as the gift. We have witnessed close friends nearly divorcing over the amount of money they spend on each other for Christmas. We vowed never to do that. Mostly we try to remember the reason for this celebration and express gratitude for the way-shower, Christ Jesus.

in the past i used to have my shopping done and gifts wrapped before thanksgiving and only baking and so forth left to do, because every one who comes to my christmas eve party gets some candy, cookies and breads to take home---the kids always get books ----------but now i'm not able to walk around stores like i used to-----------and dollar stores where i found a lot of the small items for the kids do not have the riding carts

yesterday, knowing we had bad weather coming for the rest of the week--------i left here about 830 am and headed for bed bath and beyond where i had several coupons -------i could not believe a trip of 10 miles that normally takes about 30 plus minutes because of stop lights -----i made in about 10  minutes----------EVERY STOPLIGHT WAS GREEN! -------------i took that as a sign that i should go ahead and finish my shopping--------i bought my son a movie theater popcorn maker because he eats m.w. popcorn every night and i worry about his cholesterol-----for my d-i-l i got that cuisinart griddler--------it folds and cooks or lays flat and cooks-------and they put everything in my car for me----------then i decided to drive over to the indian store (3 mi further) and pick up my cigarettes -------again EVERY LIGHT WAS GREEN-----------then i came back to kroger where they are having a special on gift cards  where you get 4 times the value in gasoline points -----------$1. equals 1 point and every 100 points equals .10 cents off per gallon ---------------and bought  barnes and noble and best buy cards to finish up-----------------stopped at a dollar store on the way home to pick up some ornaments to re do my door wreaths and actually found some very nice bakery gift bags at 8/$1.        i was home around 1130 and when i picked my grandson from school he brought every thind in for me, put up a few more outside lights ---------------and today i'm going to stay in and start baking

I do some of my shopping on line at LL Bean.  I love their sales.  I really don't have many to shop for since my parents are gone.  I get my sister's gift early so I can hand deliver it when I visit in the summer.  Postage is a big bite if one has to mail stuff.

I finished up my shopping the last week of October.  As soon as the "deals" are announced, I am on them!!  Shopping early saves my sanity (what is left of it!).....not having to deal with BIG CROWDS is worth every penny spent!

I have a few gifts to get.  The grandkids and my daughter.  But I think that will be it this year.  Short on cash and there are a lot more bill that are coming in this year than ever before.
I have made a decision that I will not be getting my sister anything this year.  I know it is not right to give a gift and expect one in return but for the past 8 years, including birthdays I have searched for special items for her and I have yet to get a gift in return.  So I have decided this year that I will take the money and time that I would put to her gift and spend some time at the local animal shelter.

Nellie, you sure can't argue when the good luck is with you.  It makes me feel great when the lights are green and you find a good parking place.
Better yet that Bed Bath and Beyond has pretty good prices and the coupons never expire.  And a very good return policy at that.
Now on a personal note...we just have to get you to give up the cigarettes!  You worry about your son's cholesterol I worry about your smoking. (Had to put my 2 cents in on that.)Laughing

OK - I'll chime in on smoking.  I LOVED smoking - 3 1/2 packs a day -  and certainly had no desire to ever quit.
Then I knew I'd be spending lots of time in the hospital with no chance of leaving the bed to sneak a smoke.  YIKES.
Oct. 10, 2005, the morning of my first stay I put out my last cigarette.  Not easy but I haven't had one since then.

What I'm trying to say is - I was a happy, heavy smoker but I managed to quit.   Very, very  bad situation in my life but
a cigarette wouldn't have helped a thing.   I quit - anyone can.
