We had a discussion during the holiday, I don't know how it got started, but everyone had an opinion. What personality traits (flaws, actually) do you find intolerable? Habitual lying? Arrogance? Jeal

I think Arrogance is one of the worst.  Having arrogance may "fester" all the other traits mentioned.
This is an interesting topic.  Will be a great discussion around the table on New Years as we all plan our resolutions.
Right now I have a problem with a  short temper and being intolerant.  Working on that. But it is difficult and I know the cause of my intolerance will not resolve but become worse. Ok, this is probably a bit more information than you wanted.

Nikki, I love your response. I can't stand when people are impatient. Like getting out of a grocery line 2 minutes faster is really going to impact someone's life? I think as we get older we figure out there are so many more important things in life than getting somewhere a little faster, for example. I can't tolerate lying. My boss lied and told stories we all knew were not true. I lost a lot of respect for him because of that. Can't wait to hear more of you.

People not paying their own bills. Can't stand it when someone says their child called and they HAD? to pay something for them. I had one of those 'til the wallet closed down, Firmly and finally. It hurt but was worth it.

One of my psych.Instructers made a statement in class one day and I find this very true,Quote:The more responsible you are, the more responsible you are.I guess I would have to say I don't like irresponsible people. The responsible party is always having to pick up the slack of those who are not.In the work place, underinsured and uninsured drivers, drunk drivers, just everywhere you look.It could be as simple as putting the shopping cart back were it belongs after you use it.Why should someone have their car damaged because you were lazy. Why should someone have to work harder because of shortage of help because you decide you don't want to go to work today. The list goes on and on.Be responsible for your actions,it would be appreciated.

Wow! What a question, Debra! Sure gives one something to think about and I wonder if sometimes we are all guilty of one of these things! I tend to go along with all of your previous comments. And it's true...one of these bad traits can sometimes tend to lead to other bad traits and they just go on and on. I think the one I find the worst is habitual lying. When a person is like that, you just never know when you can believe anything they say. I know a couple of people like that and I've learned not to trust or believe them ever again once I found out how they lie. It's very sad!

I was at my grandsons school and there was a poster near the door.  I may be off a bit on the exact words but here is the best that I can remember.
Watch your thoughts
For they become actions
Watch your actions
For they become habits
Watch your habits
For they become character
Watch your character
For that becomes your destiny.
There is a little food for thought.  And if I find I have this wrong I will post the correct phrasing.

Arrogance and habitual lying have to be at the top of my list.  Whether it be a public figure, a boss or someone living down the street,  these have to be the worst traits in a human being.  How can you trust someone once you figure out what they are doing?  It is sad that some people have these character flaws and don't even acknowledge the possibility.  I agree with you all that even one bad trait leads to others.

Nikki, I love your post. That is very true. And H.M. those are the worst for me,too. I hate when people act like they are above other people because they they drive an expensive car, etc.

Debra...very good question!

I must say habitual lying.  I just lost my job to one right before the holidays and I am very upset about the whole thing.  The sad part is,  how can you prove it and I think that is what bother me the most?

I also do not care for is a person that is all about "ME"...well, give ME a break!  lol

Oh Susan, that is just terrible. You probably never say anything negative about anyone even when you should.People like that have a low self esteem and they lie to make themselves look good to others.People have to realize when they do things like that how devastating that can be to a persons whole world and family, their livelihood. You will find another job and I will pray for you that it is a better one, with much nicer co workers.God bless you Susan,I know you are a very kind person.

Susan, I feel your pain. I lost my job at a historical site here in Ohio when the sites were all taken over by private groups. The group at my site proceeded to hire back the only 2 people there that had been in trouble for causing hostile workplace and harrassment. No one else got their jobs back, and I,too am sick about it over 1 year later. I loved my job. It is so unfair. I keep thinking karma will catch up to them, but so far-no.

Gale...

Thank you for your kind words and prayers.

My husband tells me that I am too nice for my own good and too trusting.  I always try to think positive and follow the Golden Rule.  I hope I find a job soon, with the way the economy is, jobs are very hard to find!  But, I have the faith!

Lying is the #1. I do not like people that do things that "seem" nice to only benefit themselves (let the person behind you with a few items go in front of you at the checkout to find that they are waiting for a kid to return with more items & do not want to lose their place in line or a neighbor offers to water your plants for your weekend get away & then asks you to water their plants for their vacation that is 2 weeks long along with the taking care of the grass  or a neighbor brings you some food "a new recipe" that was so bad the dog did not eat it), or a person that is "always" right.

I enjoy being around educated people.  You can use words which otherwise need explanation to the uneducated.  I feel everyone should strive o better themselves in every way and not just get by.

Niki, You are not alone. I tend to "spark" when I am tired or busy. I have a husband who constantly asks what I call anything that I make for dinner, etc. When I give him the answer, chicken or dinner or food, he wants more info. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Wonderful food for thought! I do try to control my actions and temper. It takes a lot of prayer but sometimes I slip. I do like this and will copy it and put on my refrigerator as a reminder next to my sign "EXPECT MIRACLES.'

Now that I have responded to the many wonderful comments. What do I find intolerable...Deceit, when people do not tell the truth and you know that they are lying. My Dad, had a great way of teaching us to be truthful and it works. When I was a child, he used to say that if I told the truth, I wouldn't be punished and he stood by this as well as when he made a promise he kept it. Never promise something that you may not be able to keep. I miss him every day.

Debra...

Why does that happen...the ones that causes the problems stay?   I just don't understand!!!

I was warned about this person on both interviews and I thought it can't be that bad...well, I should have walked away.  So why keep a person like this in the office?

So Debra, you are right, just not fair!
