I've posted on and off at vbb previously. But, I haven't checked in for quite a long time. Boy, have they changed the look of this site.Surprised 
As far as Bar Keepers Friend goes, a very good friend of mine swears by it. Before I saw a can of it, next to her kitchen sink, honestly I'd never heard of it.

I have to buy cheap pans to keep on hand for my husband to use.  He does not think think his food is "done" if it is not at leat partially black.  I can't stand to use the pans after he does.  I can barely stay in the house.  The smell of burned food turns my stomach.  But he does not see any problem with it.  And can't see why I don't want any.....

I've burned pans containing oatmeal and coffee, of all things. Soaking the inside of a burned pan in Bar Keepers Friend works well. You may also consider using enough  straight bleach poured in the bottom of the pan to cover it. Set the pan aside for overnight, or even a day or two--That will definately do the trick. The cooked on black gunk basically peals off. Your pan may be stained/discolored from the burned on mess, but after pouring out the bleach and giving the pan a good wash, the pan will function as it should.

Sometimes we get distracted and forget about what we left on the stove. I cannot tell how many times in the last few years I have left the electric burner on and sat down to dinner. Thank God it has a little light that tells when the top is hot.

Any suggestions?

I have some good pans that my husband burned badly and was ready to discard.  When I talked to the company about ordering new pans they said to use Cameo on them so I did.  Put a thick layer of the powdered cleaner on the burned spot and rub with a damp cloth.  It will take quite a bit of rubbing and you might have to do it more than once but it works.

Hi Nancy, I just have to tell you this story,I laughed when I heard this one.My son was at work,one of the girls he works with was told to clean the ovens and to put some elbow grease into it.Later in the evening she is looking around and asked my son where is the elbow grease,well he starting laughing and told her that elbow grease is just a saying,she was embarased.Later in the evening she was looking for the scrub pads and asked him for help finding these,well he started laughing and told her they were on the shelf next the elbow grease. lol lol lol.

It appears that all the remedies are abrasive. Is this true? What do you do for non-stick pans that can get stuck?

lol lol lol Gale -- that's a good one!  Usually MY elbow grease is just plain empty.

Angela - I don't have any idea about cleaning a non-stick pan.... I gave up on non-sticks some time ago.  
Well, all my skillets are non-stick ... cheap WalMart non-stick skillets.   Some time ago I just gave up on good, expensive pots and pans and skillets and buy what I can not worry about too much.

Ditch the burned up pan and get yourself some cookessentials or Technique cookware from QVC!!!!  I LOVE my set. I've had them for 15 years and they are still cleaning out like a dream....burned up food or not!!!

I bought SaladMaster back in the 70's and I still use it daily along with all my cast iron pans. I do have a couple of non stick, small skillets for eggs though. I don't care what I use to keep them from sticking, it doesn't work so, non-stick skillets are my lifesavers!

Thanks for the tip. I also have calphalon saucepans that are non-stick. You would expect the pots to not peel, but after 7 years of use and never using metal utensils or Pam since they tell you not to use it on the non-stick pans they seem to be starting to get marks and I know that then they are not usuable because of possible bad side effects and they should go into the trash. Never again spending that much money on non-stick!

Hi NANCY ;  i HAVE NO IDEA HOWMUCH CREAM OFTARTAR COSTSInnocentMoney mouth; I was given acontainer; by  a FRIEND WHO PREFERED DONATING to taing me shopping to buy some or alternativly to buying ome  or e delivering to me,....
.She saidshe"never uses it"  & SINCE I EEDED IT,AT LEASTITWOULDBE PUT TO GOO D SE& NOT GO TO WASTE.
I have o idea what it  osts ;I onlyknow  that the pan   was   WEDDING GIFT (from al ong sincedeceased  dear GreatAunt & I didn't want o thow it out if it was salvageable

Ann -- will 1/4 cup of cream of tartar (precious cookie stuff - lol) cost as much as a new pan?  I'll try a baking soda scrub first .... then I'll try the cream of tartar.     THANKS

HiWa-Ha ; For non stck pans,I  use CAPHALON( anodized aluminum), very heavyweight& makes a great wok &omelet pan  .Last year hubby bough tme a Paula D. 2Qt nonstick sauce pan( @walmart; also sold2Target [ around$20-$25] used for soups  ;  beans &  rice ( for2).Since he does  much of the  kitchen cleanup I think he really bought it for himselfUndecided; WE BOTH LOVE ITKiss
