I use to be a member of Sam's, but due to the fact that they had few cashiers open, no matter what day or time (and we were tired of standing in long lines for two years), we switched over to BJ's.

Have been more than pleased with BJ's--the nice selection of items and their prices at the gas pump.  Plenty of cashiers open every time I'm there too, but do not like the fact that they are not all over the US (mainly on the east coast).

Soon we will be opening a Costco in town.  I will go over and check it out when it opens, as I've never been in one.

I can't afford multi  memberships and my BJ's membership will be up in a few months.  If I make a change, this would be the time.

Looking forward to hearing what you think of these whole sale stores.

We have BJs and Sams cards. When we go up North, the only club that we can get gas etc. cheaper is BJs. But we do like the sams meat. Can't get to a Sams here. Gave up our Costco membership because it was too far to go to get some buys.

I have a trial membership to BJ's,I have been a member at both Sam's and Costco.I will be renewing at Costco.I just like the way Costco is set up the store is bright and I think their selection is vast.Their prices are good too.Sam's would be my second choice.BJ's is good because they do accept manufacturers coupons but their selection isn't as good as the other two.

I am in Illinois and we do not have a BJ's near.   There used to be one in Rolling Meadows and we belonged.
Got a Sam's Club membership and have had that for years.
When Costco opened I got a membership there.
I do shop both.  Costco is less expensive for my medication.
Sam's has great deals on close out items the includes meat.
Costco does not have a close out section although they do move items to the end of and aisle and will mark it down but you have to search for the mark down items.  They do not mark down meat items.
The cost of the Costco membership has gone up and I will most likely drop it.  Funny thing is it is the only place my husband will ask to go to.  He no longer will carry on a conversation with me but every day he will put on his hat and ask to go to Costco. He likes the samples they give.
I guess on the plus side the cakes that Costco has a 1/2 sheet cake, decorated, filled with your choice of filling and frosted is under $15.00 and they are good.  But since I no longer can work I do not bring cakes to work so I have not had one in a while. But I can't make, fill, frost and decorate that size cake for $15.00.

We only have Costco, so I am not able to compare.  Our Costco is about 5 minutes from our house, so it is very convenient.  Ours is one of the smaller stores, so we do not have a gas station or some other conveniences.  My husband got his hearing aid at a larger Costco and has been very pleased with it and the service they provide.  We have a membership that allows us to get in an hour earlier than the regular patrons, and they also give us a check at the end of the year depending on how much we spend.  It usually covers the cost of the membership with some left over!

i have a sam's card and do go there for spices---------paper goods and garbage bags  and whatever i find
i don't normally buy meat there because i shop sales and buy meat only when it is on sale and i can always beat their prices --i also buy some convenience frozen products    and always their potato buds because they are the best you'll ever eat
there are 3 sam's stores near enough to go

no bj's near houston

quite a few costco's            but none near enough for me to bother with          the nearest is about 30 miles away

We used to belong to BJ's years ago but then they closed up and moved away.  Also had a Sam's Club membership for quite a few years and gave that up when they kept raising the price.  For the few times a year we went there it just wasn't worth keeping it anymore.  We do get a lot of advertising for Costco but it really isn't worth the membership price unless you go there a lot and buy in larger quantities.  With only two of us, it takes forever to go through huge packages of anything, except maybe bathroom tissue lol.

I refuse to pay to go shopping. I pay less for gasoline by checking  the internet. The service stations are  also closer. I receive better  buys on groceries by using coupons. I paid less for my television the day before Thanksgiving by checking Best Buy and finding what I wanted. I went in the store told them what I wanted and paid.  This took about 15 minutes. The television I chose was higher Black Friday on "SALE".

Since we have only Sam's, we go to Sam's.  We like the gasoline savings plus other items.

Thank you Angela, Gale, Nikki, Barbara, Nellie, H.M., and Maxine for chiming in on my whole sale store questions.  I appreciate your reply.

Looks like your choice of store(s)  depends on where you live and store locations, as well as your personal preferences.

Once I am able to get inside Costco and see it first hand, I guess I'll be able to make a clearer decision as to renew BJ's or go with Costco.  Costco will not be the most convent location, but we'll see if we like the choices they offer and if it would be worth driving over to.  I doubt very much I would go back to Sam's (even though it is closer to my home), mainly because in the years I did have a membership, the service never got better.

Thanks once again everyone for your input on this topic.

I agree with you Maxine,  I too get great deals at our Giant Eagle with double coupons and sales. CVS, Walgreens, and Rite-aid have freebies every week to stock up on.

There isn't a BJ's or a Costco's in our area of the state.  It's bad enough that the closest Sam's Club is 45 minutes away!!  We moved from NY where every thing was within 10 minutes to NC where there is nothing within 10 minutes except for WalMart (woo).  Some times it takes us longer than 10 minutes to get there....drivers here leave much to be desired. Oh well...moving....such is the life of a military wife!!Smile

We have a Sam's club that we joined but no BJ's or Costco near us. I get some things at Sam's but don't buy there meat.

I agree with Maxine.  I refuse to pay to go shopping, like I refuse to pay to watch TV.  We have a Sam's and I go there occasionally when they have a "free" day.  I've compared prices, and most stuff is cheaper at a regular grocery store if you watch the sales.  The only things I would buy at Sam's would be real maple syrup (hate the artificial kind), the large bag of Craisins and large thing of cinnamon.

Not sure about the laws all over the country but you can fill a prescription at Sam's or Costco without having a membership here in Illinois.  It might be a great way to go in and wander around while waiting for your Rx.  Costco does have two levels of membership that will provide a rebate check at the end of a 12 month period.  You have to have an American Express card to get the rebate.  You have to use cash or check or the American Express card.

lori----------and everyone

the reason i buy my t.p., paper towels and kleenex only at sam's----------even tho i am alone and some last all year----------------
you can't really compare the prices at other stores--------------because the size of the rolls and boxes ----------------or product total are much larger at sam's than at your local store

i hate changing the roll everey other day

don't look at a pkg that says it is equal to X # of rolls----------look at the # of sheets on each roll------and the # of kleenex in a box-----------
