Bird Watching

Members of VBB have talked about "their" birds in past posts.
Well, I wanted to brag today - lol.
While ago I came out of the bedroom and there was a big mocking bird ( !! ) eating suet on my deck in back.
What a thrill. My book says that mocking birds are here in Missouri year round but I haven't seen one since last summer.

What are you seeing at this time of year?

The inside of the house right now. lol lol lol

I see the normal birds for this area,Robins,Starlings,Sparrows,Cardinals and Crows,I'm know there are more but can't think of them now.Nancy there must be something in the area that is drawing them there.When my pond was here we had all kinds of birds that I had never seen before and dragonflies also.My friend Fern plants and puts out different types feed to draw the birds into the area.In the morning you can hear all these birds in her yard chattering.She has bamboo growing in her yard and they love to sit on the branches and sing.

I need to dig up a bird book. We have several in the morning that like to bathe in our fountain, but I have no idea what they are. We also have hummingbirds, nearly year-round. For the past year I have watched a Hawk hovering overhead at various times of the day, and occasionally I hear an owl in the evening. We live in a city of 250,000, and it's so pleasant listening to the birds singing in the early hours of our busy day.

I live in an almost barren housing development ..... just condos, town houses and individual units all packed together. We didn't have anything until yast year when the developer of this place planted a tiny tree in each condo yard. Even a small flower bed is unknown.
So I have no idea where the birds come from ....I see flickers and red bellied wood peckers all the time.... we get many hummers in the summer. I can't wait!!
And the little road leading here is full of KINGFISHERS!! and all sorts of hawks. When I lived far out in the woods I never once saw a kingfisher.

I did see a hummingbird scout a week ago in Pine Bluff, AR. So I put up two feeders with sugar water.

I have lots of sparrows outside my house. I do see a few cardinals, blue jays and pigeons every once in a while.

Last week and this week lots of the cranes were circling the sky. They fly so high and their call is unmistakeable. I think in one group there must have been 50 or more.
I saw the post about the hummingbird I am going to try this year to attract them. I got a feeder last fall, on close out, it is a feeder and food. I think it was around $6.00. I will make up the mix that is in the kit then I will make my own. I figure the first few batches will be tossed out until they find my feeder.
I do have big plans for planting this year but funds are short so I will have to put off most of my planting but I do want to get in a few items that will get the hummingbirds here.

Yesterday, it was raining very hard, but I looked out in our yard and spotted two very puffed up quail. Usually we see them mostly in the summer, but there they were. Usually we see families, but this was just the two of them. We have also noticed Blue Jays and robins. Occasionally we will see a Kite circling the tree tops, and we always have crows. They make a lot of noise!

I've never seen a crane :-( Great blue herons are common here....breath taking birds........ but I've never seen a crane.

It's absolutely silly but today I put out two hummer feeders. Everything is so early .... maybe hummers will be here before the expected date of April 19 th. Once I saw my first on March 29!

There's great blue herons here also. We have little green herons, but I only hear them. We put out a lot of feeders with sunflower seeds and suet so we get lots of birds. The downy, hairy, red bellied and pileated woodpeckers seem to love the suet. Downy practically lives on the feeder. Occasionally there's a red-headed woodpecker. I noticed the goldfinches are putting on their yellow summer suits now. The purple finches are still here and aren't supposed to leave until May. I wonder if they'll leave early because of the warm weather.
The red-winged blackbirds came back 3 weeks early. We put cracked corn on the ground for the doves and blue jays. Cardinals like it also along with the sunflower seeds.
I saw a tufted titmouse on a rose of sharon bush pecking at last year's old seed pod.
