lol lol -Verlee - that's how we got rid of the horrible walnut husks ... we dumped them on the driveway which was gravel (every other part of the road to our house was dirt!) All the walnuts were dumped and as they were "shaved" and finally dry, we picked them up again. The gravel was so thin it wasn't a problem. The walnuts and the hickorys were broken open (hammer on a flat rock) inside the house, next to the single wood stove and the kernels were saved. We always had a crushed finger or two.

We have both walnuts and hickories here. I cracked enough walnuts one year to make a pie but it was a lot of work. I love hickories, but they aren't the big kind and are really a huge job. Squirrels are planting the walnuts everywhere so I'm always digging out or cutting off walnut trees. They are always where I don't want them.
