With all the hot weather we've had, the wild animals are becoming a real nuisance.  We have six fruit trees in the yard and the squirrels, skunks and rabbits are getting to be a real pain.  I don't mind if they take a piece of fruit and eat it once in a while.  However, the squirrels take one bite of a fruit then go for another one.  There were at least two dozen peaches on the ground again today all with one bite taken out of them.  They do the same thing with the pears and apples.  Don't understand why the sonar repellant isn't working on those rotten little rodents but they sure take off when I get out there.  Running me ragged lol.

Anybody else having problems with the bushy tailed rodents?  If so, how do you deter them?

Hi H.M. They sell bird netting to put over fruit trees. They also sell Owl decoys to put in the yard, rodents are very fearful of Owls.We had a problem with skunks around here and I put moth balls around the perimeter of the yard and that kept them away.I know what you mean about squirrels. The one year I had beautiful green peppers and I had gone to the store to buy ground meat to make stuffed peppers. When I pulled into the yard I noticed all my green peppers were gone. The squirrels pulled everyone off of the plants and they were laying around the yard with one bite taken out.I never put my pumpkins out on the porch anymore because they do the same with those. You might try putting out dry corn on the cobb out for them they love that and they might leave your fruit trees alone if they are full of corn lol.Good luck!

Sorry that you are having a problem. Unfortunately the animals were there before us and can be a nusiance. We usually have a problem with mice in the country, but have solved it with electric repelents, and believe it or not, catnip! The owl sounds good, maybe a barking dog could help too. I know that eating just a bite and then leaving the rest is a real pain. Check with the local college they sometimes have cures or look on-line for a way to deter the pests.

I have a neighbor who puts out food for the chipmunks.  I have them living under my back steps and there is a handicap ramp built over the steps so I can not easily get to the holes they have made.  They drive my little dachshunds crazy and the cats sit and watch them and their tails twitch, I know they want to get them! The squirrels hang out in the trees behind the house by another neighbor and they will sit and chatter at the dogs just out of reach!  They are such a tease I am sure they know just what they are doing.

The fence across the back of our lot we have named "The Squirrel Highway".  They tear back and forth constantly.  Some of our neighbors have had problems with critters eating fruit from their trees, but they have left our apple tree alone for the most part.

One year they got into our attic and scurried around constantly.  It drove our dog nuts.  We have also had raccoons in our attic which was horrible.  They ate through the roof and had a great time building their nest and producing 3 babies. That really drove our poor dog insane.

We finally called Animal Control and they put traps in the attic, but never caught anything.  At last the babies were big enough to leave.  As an end result our dog was bitten on the paw, which meant a trip to the Vet, and rabies booster shots.

Meantime we have a new roof on our house (composition not shakes), and the critters have stayed away.

When we had squirrels in the attic we threw a bunch of moth balls around up there.  I'm not sure it did any good, but it made us feel better.  At least we were doing something, however you could smell them to some extent.

Now we just enjoy the quail that we get passing through the yard and several humming birds that are around.  We have 2 feeders for them.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.  Unfortunately our fruit trees are so tall it would be impossible to get the netting over them.   I'll have to see about getting an owl or two, even though I already have two electronic devices.   Well, at least the critters are staying away from my tomatoes for now.

Tonight I went for a walk down the block and the stench from the skunks was so bad I had to turn around and come home.   It would be nice if the fox would come back in the neighborhood lol.

Glad to see that you are taking this with a wonderful sense of humor. Maybe some sort of protector like a large shield aroud the middle of the tree to keep the squirrels from climbing. They use this on bird feeders and the sometimes work, but squirrels are clever and funny acrobats.  Maybe the scent of skunk would work!

We have some animals picking and biting at our tomato plants and pepper plants.  The pick them, take a bite and then drop them.  I have found several in the yard. My mom said to put cheyenne pepper on and around the plants to keep them away.  I won't hurt the plants or the animals.  It seems to be working.

We've had squirrels since we move here in 1972.  However, we never had deer. For several weeks now, we have been having deer come on our property and feasting.

We have lots of deer.  They come up into the yard to eat the pears that have fallen off the tree.  This tree has so many i don't mind sharing. I'll find a nice big pear on the ground, pick it up and find someone has been nibbling on it.  In addition to the deer, we have rabbits, coons. opossums and squirrels.  I've also seen a skunk or 2.  someone has been doing lots of digging.  I planted bulbs and the next day i had to plant them again as someone came in the night and dug them out.  This time I put wire over the planted area.

We left our summer residence and our neighbors goats behind. They have been relatively pain free, although they have taking a liking to us and started coming up on our deck. We solved that with a gate. Good luck on your animal problem.

No fruit trees this far north - but I do have a bird feeder that starts to spin as soon as the squirrels get on it - fun to watch them fly thru the air!!
