Anybody give up goodies for Lent?

Since today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, I was wondering how many of you give up goodies until Easter. Our family always did when I was a kid and it sometimes follows through now. The years my birthday falls during Lent doesn't usually make it, but most of the time NO DESSERTS until Easter. Maybe a pound or 2 might just go away during that time?????

I've never 'obeyed' (is that the correct word?) the Lent traditions.
Where I went to church as a little child the minister would not allow any Easter activities. He said we celebrated Christ rising every day of the year, not just one
The men of church would make little bags of candy and stand just outside the door to hand to each child as they left the building.

We give up pop here.We don't eat meat on ash Wednesday or any Friday during Lent.No chocolate during lent that is easy for me,not a huge chocolate fan.This is not easy for the guys however.Every Easter my hubby always want's a big solid Milk Chocolate Bunny.I wonder if this is why? lol This just may have something to do with it. lol

I used to give up smoking; but then I quit completely, so chocolate went away during Lent. That was all when I was YOUNGER! Now I don't have any will power, so I always give in before Lent is over. Bad girl!!

I don't give up something special for Lent.I do attend the Lenten Church Services.
We do have a lenten calendar. That is 1 penny for every light fixture in your house and
different things like that. It is given in church after Lent.

One year, I gave up candy for Lent. I was so proud of myself for actually making it until Easter. However, I haven't been able to do it again.

When I was a child in catholic school the teachers would always want us to give up something for Lent. Not a surprise that I have blocked all that out lol.

I do give up eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on fridays during Lent. Usually I make it all the way through without a slip-up but there have been times in the past. Harder on my husband since he isn't catholic, but then I tell him that fish is good for him anyway lol. Did try giving up chocolate one year but that lasted about five minutes total!

Nancy, I like your pastor's philosophy: "He said we celebrated Christ rising every day of the year, not just one." That's my philosophy as well, and trying to follow the Golden Rule.

Don't eat meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent. Try to be a better person and do more for others. Limit desserts and no chocolate. Also read scriptures more. Had no dessert tonight.

The object of Lent is to get even closer to Jesus. Giving up things we love to have is one thing, but trying to make positive changes in yourself during these 40 days help us to reflect and hopefully become better people. We also celebrate the Resurection every day, but this I like acknowledging that we too can live Christlike even though we are sinners and he was not, but accepted his crucifixion because of love of us. Sorry for preaching, but sometimes we forget that we are "One Nation Under GOD"

Giving up something for lent is OK but I have always admired those who use lent to make positive changes. Try to be more loving and helpful. One e-mail I got recomended trying to be kinder to everyone we meet because everyone is fighting some kind of battle,.

I think the town I grew up in was 99% catholic so it was always a big deal to give up candy. Now I don't eat that much candy anyway, just good dark chocolate.
