I've always let my boys do things in the kitchen. This is the time of year for coloring eggs.My boys always colored our eggs and enough for grandma too! They were allowed to bake also,we started out with pre made cookie dough and they had a blast making and decorating the cookies. Now they still do help me in the kitchen. We couldn't have the big meals I make without a little muscle in the kitchen. My oldest is married and he does all the cooking,my DIL is not a cook, isn't she lucky to have a guy like my son.I think that is shame that her mom didn't teach her.I've tried and she has no interest in learning because her husband does the cooking.I tried.

I did not work in the kitchen when I was a kid ..... Oh, cleaning, doing dishes  and things like that but never cooking or learning..
That was a real handicap when I NEEDED to cook.  I failed and messed-up a lot.
Of course, I think it's terrifically important that a child learns at least the basics of cooking.

All 3 of my kids knew how to cook before they graduated/moved out! Now I'm teaching and creating cooking/baking memories with my granddaughter! Smile

My kids always helped me with my baking when they were little.  Now, they are learning how to do some cooking when they go camping with the Boy Scouts.  I've been letting them help out in the kitchen when they can.  They are great at making things in the microwave and making mac & cheese.  Hopefully, they will develop more skills.

I used to help my mother with some of the holiday baking.  I remember the old enamel dish pan which she'd clean out and then make the fruit cake.  She got the recipe from a magazine ad for mince meat.  It made 2 loaves, which she'd wrap in cheese cloth and store, periodically soaking the cheese cloth in more rum or brandy (I can't remember now which one).  To this day, I still like fruit cake.  We didn't do too much for Easter, but as kids we did help color Easter eggs.

For a few years, until my 2 sons schedules got too busy, I had each of them plan and prepare one meal a week. It was usually messy but fun. They had some interesting menu ideas!
