One package of cake mix,24 regular ice cream cones with the flat bottoms, One 16 oz.can of frosting, candy sprinkles.(nonpareils) Prepare cake mix according to package directions,fill ice cream cones 1/3 full and place on cookie sheet, bake according to package instuctions for cup cakes,bake 20-25 min.or until cake tests done.Remove to cooling rack to cool completly.Frost and decorate with candy sprinkles.You could let the kids do their own decorating,supplying them with,sprinkles ,gummy bears ,m&m's etc.Even big kids like these.

Wow - oh -wow - Gale I make so many treats for kids. This sounds wonderful - exactly what I need.
Can you tell me how I'm going to make a cone (with liquid cake mix inside) stand upright?
Won't it turn right over and spill the mix on a cookie sheet?
Will a cone fit in a cup cake pan?

And I just thought ..... my kids "art" class on Sunday evening .... wouldn't they love to decorate them? Wow! thank you.

There's no way I can get to WalMart today --- snow on the streets -- but I won't need these until Sunday night.
Please, everyone tell me what decorations to buy.

Hi Nancy I made these for my kids and the neighborhood kids when they were little,I don't remember having any trouble keeping the cones up right.I'm thinking I filled them,placed the cookie sheet in the oven then put the cones on the cookie sheet, they will be bottom heavy due to the cake mix.They loved them and no cupcake papers to pick up.

I made these once. I am generally not a fan of cupcakes. When I made them I placed the ice cream cones in a muffin tin to hold the cones, just in case they shifted at all in either transfer to the oven or in baking.
They are great for a kids party.

I haven't had these since Camp Fire Girsl. Our leader showed all of us how to make them, so for the next year they were at almost of our birthday parties!

I made these - or tried - early Sunday morning.......... I used Duncan Hines chocolate mix.
The cones would not stand in a cupcake pan so I used foil to build little braces for all 24 cups. Slow work.
I filled 4 cones with the amount I thought would be correct and baked them alone as a test.

Miserable failure ... every cone over ran horribly ... terrible mess on baking tin and the cones were ruined.

So I filled the remaining 20 cones with much less mix and but them all in oven. (I used those mini-cupcake tins and less
foil packing for these). But they all ran over again spoiling the ice cream cones completely and making a real mess.
I gave up and tossed them all.

After morning church I went to WalMart and got more cake mix ......... baked 24 very usual, very plain cupcakes. Sunday night at "art" class the kids fell in love with this project (I talked about how sweetly God loves us) They had a giant ball decorating them -- what unusual, beautiful cupcakes we had to show the church service. Oh what fun.

I have an idea for you Nancy that can be done with children but I must pull out the recipe if you want it.

We had a family picnic and my niece said she would bring a dessert. So the day of the picnic, she brought these flower pots with an artificial flower in it. I looked at her and I looked at the flower pot, you would not believe what she made. In the flower pot was what she called "Dirt" which was made with pudding and I think crushed cookies. And then in another pot she had "Sand" which was made the same way but she decorated it with gummy worms. It was really clever.

So my idea is if you can get little flower pots and make the "Dirt" and "Sand", the children can fill the pots and decorate it with artificial flowers and bugs. This would make a nice spring project; God creates new life.

So, if you like the idea, let me know and I will post the recipe!

The flower pots with the dirt, crushed Oreo cookies or any chocolate cookie, the pudding inside the pot and a gummy worm or two are so cute. Kids have fun making and eating them. Very cute project idea for Valentines Day or even Mothers Day.

Susan -- I probably can't afford a pot for each kid   ........ and the things to fill them are expensive.
If I could I suppose they would have to washed very well before using.    With the texture of the pots wouldn't things baked in them stick a lot?
At Michaels I've seen very small tin buckets but they are painted and I wonder about baking in them.

If I can get to church tonight (I should be there right now but the snow is falling and the streets are too slick for a coward like me) I have an almost free project to make up for what I've spent in the last few weeks.

Nancy, go "GREEN" have each child bring in an empty and washed yogurt container. They can decorate the outside of the container with a cupcake liner then make their little "flower pot" out of the yogurt container.

Nancy,

You line the flower pots with Alum. foil before you put the Dirt and Sand mixture in it!

Nikki had a good suggestion plus you don't have to use a big flower pot, small ones would work well too. Maybe a local nursery would donate the plastic flower pots if you tell them they are for a childrens project at church!

It was just an idea for you Nancy!

Never made these before but I believe I will make a half-cake mix worth. After I give it some thought this could be modified with all sorts of brownie adaptations. Sure glad I read this site

I have made these before (cupcake cones) and my grand daughter loves them as much as I do.

Good idea John! The brownie mix wouldn't rise as much as cake mix for less mess. Might also leave more room for all the goodies to top them off lol.
