I am making a sangria for my  son's 40th birthday... Ihave found different recipes I was wondering if instead fo adding surgar I should make a simple syrup...... have never made the sangria but r

I am making a sangria for my  son's 40th birthday... Ihave found different recipes I was wondering if instead fo adding surgar I should make a simple syrup...... have never made the sangria but really do want to try it.

I think that by making a simple syrup the sugar will more thoroughly dissolve giving you a smoother taste.  No grit in the bottom of the glass.  I make a simple syrup of sorts for iced tea.  (I just add a spoon full of sugar to a bit of boiling water then add that to the tea. I hate that the sugar takes so long to dissolve in the ice water.)

If you have the time the sugar will dissolve in cold fluids, it just takes longer.  If you make it the day before of in the morning I think it really will not make a difference.  But if there is a possibility that you will be making more during the party I would make a batch of the simple syrup to have on hand.  It does keep and will work for iced tea, iced coffee, lemonade as well.

Would it work as well with one of the artificial sweetners?  I try to avoid adding real sugar to things that I drink.

An artificial sweetener will never make simple syrup, will it?
I wonder if you could use PART sweetener....... I sort of doubt it.

Pat - I'm trying (just trying - I haven't succeeded yet)  to give my my dear, much loved Diet Pepsi.
I'm trying to quit Aspertame.

Pat and Nancy,I did a little research and found an answer for you.Yes you can make a simple syrup using sucralose which is Splenda,my grocery store sells their brand which is almost 1/2 the cost of Splenda. 1 cup of Splenda (Sucralose) and 1 cup boiling water stir until dissolved,strain to remove any sediment.

Great!   Thanks Gale.  I already have some of the Splenda.  Though, myself I prefer Sweet & Low for my iced tea.  My husband usually prefers Splenda.

Nancy, I never could handle Aspertame.  My favorite soda is or should I say was, Mountain Dew.  When they brought out a diet version I was excited.  But I could not drink even a glass full without getting horrible pains in my stomach.  So gradually I stopped drinking sodas except for occasional indulgences.   I mainly drink iced tea now.
