In Response to Re: Pie Crust?? HELP!:
Here there's ALWAYS a can of lard under the Crisco stuff in any grocery store. It's a big green and white can/container like a pail............ Or it used to be. I haven't looked for a long time. Used to be that the ONLY thing you ever used for frying chicken was lard. And when I was a kid on the farm ..... in cold weather the pigs were butchered and all the fat was thrown into an enormous black kettle on a fire - outside of course - and cooked until it was melted fat - lard. It was poured into big , thick ceramic bowls to cool and harden. Home made lard - ready to go. lol - thinking of those times ........ apple butter was made in those giant kettles over an open fire, usually at church. A group of women all worked together peeling and chopping bushels and bushels of apples to toss into that kettle. Then they were all angry with each other because this woman wanted some cinnamon, that woman didn't, that woman wanted this and the other woman refused to allow it ..... and on and on all day.

Hi Nancy,My husbands sister lived in Mo.She passed away a few years ago.I remember going to see her and she fried everything in bacon grease. We were there for a week and I gained 10 pounds. Her father in law raised cattle and hogs so they always had fresh meat from the farm and everything else that went with it.She asked me if I cooked with bacon grease and I told not very often. She asked me to save mine and she would pick it up from me when she came to see the family (serious bacon addict) lol !
