I always used Parkay Oleo when baking and the receipe called for either butter or oleo.  But now I cannot find Parkay at my supermarket.   Any suggestions?

Does your store carry Land O Lakes brand?  I think it's very good for baking.
Mostly Land O Lakes offers butter but, I think, they have some margarine

Nancy is right Land O Lakes does carry a margarine, some stores carry their own brand also.Low fat and light margarine do not have enough fat in them they contain water.I remember seeing somewhere that you need at least 60-65% fat to cook or bake with. The light are good only for speading and flavoring foods.

Our super Walmart carries Parkay.  Also, I've used Promise in the tub form.  Ask your store manager why the store no longer carries it.  Somentimes a product will be ordered in if a customer requests it.  Good luck!!!  Mary Ann S.

Imperial can be substituted for Parkay as well.

Some of our stores have discontinued certain brands of margarine.  Probably weren't selling well enough.  I found the Blue Bonnet stick margarine is very good for baking and is usually less expensive than the other brands.  Watching for sales and stocking up before the holidays helps if you plan to bake a lot.

Could I ask about margarine/oleo being used instead of butter?

You can use it instead as long as the recipe doesn't say no substitute. It will effect the taste however. There is nothing like the taste of butter in cookies and it seems that you love to bake cookies.Land O lakes does offer coupons for butter on their site.

gale - I almost always use butter in my cookies.   I used to use 1/2 butter and 1/2 Crisco, but slowly changed.
Once in a while I see a recipe that says something like, "1/2 cup shortening, 1/4 cup butter".  I do follow those instructions
but it's not something I feel comfortable about.
IMHO it makes a great difference to use butter......but that's just my opinion.  I bake a lot of cookies but I'm far from an expert baker.

Gale...

Did you get an e-mail from Land O Lakes with a coupon for 75 cents off the new item Bagel Cinn. Butter and Bagel Straw. Butter?  I just bought some yesterday at Wal-mart...haven't tried it yet!  I love bagels, usually with cream cheese though!

Unless a recipe calls for butter, I always use Fleischmann's unsalted margarine for my baking.  I am lactose intolerant and find this works very well in baking.  This margarine is lactose free.

Mary K are you by chance from the Binghamton, NY area?  I ask because 8 years ago we moved from there and we had our first trip back last summer.  We had a chance to shop in one of the Weis markets....one word EXPENSIVE!!!  If so, small small world!!!
