I have to agree with everyone who has suggested the Reynolds bags. But, their will be a lot of liquid that cooks out of turkey in the bag. Be careful when you open the bag and DO NOT dispose of the liquid. I use the liquid in my dressing, and no amount of other spices can give the dressing the great flavor.

Even if the little pop up button is up, still use your meat thermometer to check to see if your turkey is done. I have had a bad experience with a turkey that was not really fully cooked.

OK you Reynolds bag people. ............ Where do you get your liquids for GRAVY? Will that be in the bag when the turkey is finished?
I can imagine gravy without turkey but sure can't imagine turkey without gravy!

Welcome Kenny! Good luck on making that first turkey. Pretty soon you will become a pro at it.

Some stores even carry the Jennie-O turkeys that come in a bag. You just leave it in the bag and pop it in the oven.

Remember to thaw your turkey safely in the refrigerator. After baking refrigerate the leftovers.
Butterball 1-800-BUTTERBALL (1-800-288-8372). If needed.

I have to share my turkey fryer story. I always make turkey for Thanksgiving, but for Christmas I change it up with other meats, or shrimp, etc. Last year, 2 weeks before Christmas, my younger son called and asked me to get a turkey for Christmas. I questioned whether turkey twice in 30 days was too much, but he insisted. When he arrived at our home for Christmas, he came walking into the house with a large box. He said he wanted an excuse to buy a turkey fryer, and that's why he insisted we have turkey for Christmas. The day before Christmas we used the fryer to boil up a batch of crab legs...yum. On Christmas Day he cooked the turkey in the fryer, and it was excellent. We used peanut oil, and it doesn't taste oily at all.

When you brine, you must rinse the brine off the meat and pat dry. Really delicious and if you rinse the brine from the meat, it isn't salty.

Since I am now alone I have been cheating at Thanksgiving time. I buy turkey breast and cook it in a large slow cooker. It keeps all the juices, for dressing, and then I place it in the oven for about an hour to get golden brown and distribute the smell all over the house.

I just wanted to mention that I don't stuff my turkey. I cook the stuffing separately. However, if you do stuff the tukey, stuff it loosely, don't pack it in.

My family and I agreed that this was the most moist turkey we have ever tasted.I didn't brine the turkey this year,it was a self basting turkey and they have salt injected into it.I pulled the skin up and put pats of butter all over the breast meat,I put an entire head of garlic with the top cut off and a couple of lemons that I cut in half inside the breast cavity,seasoned inside and out with season salt and pepper.I rubbed it down on the back side with cannola oil.I cooked it on a rack open ,not covered and breast side down.I did baste it with chicken stock straight from the can.We flipped the turkey over for the last hour.The skin was all nice,browned and crispy.I ended up with more than a half gallon of gravy.YUMMY!

Sorry a little late, but perhaps next year, or next holiday you can refer back. I personally am not a fan of the bags. I like a nice crispy brown skin, not as moist as it comes out in one of those. I see you received many good ideas, EXCEPT NO SEASONING suggestions. For me, it would not be a tasty turkey without first seasoning the inside and out of the bird with salt, pepper, poultry seasoning, thyme, and Bell's Seasoning. (I'm not really sure what is in there, but it tastes wonderful - use when boiling shrimp too. This is the only name brand herb/spice that I use - everything else comes from a dollar store. Another note, my mother always taught me to put an onion, or scored citrus fruit inside any bird I was not going to stuff - it gives it more flavor, and heaven forbid you should over cook a bit, helps keep it's shape. The second best part of the turkey - after eating

- is the look on everyone's faces when you bring in that golden brown show piece!! Hope your dinner was great!!

Good morning Nancy G. I have been fighting with everybody involved in my injury case. Enough of all that. Holidays are a bad time of year for me now. I have TOO many problems trying to cook BUT baking is still something I can do. A little at a time but the oven does most of the cooking.

from the time i was very small (over 60 yrs ago) my grandmother cooked the turkey and dressing in a large white roaster oven--------------she gave each of her children (6) one of these when thay married and my mother also cooked hers this way and also gave each of us (5) our own ----------------this is the only way i have ever cooked a turkey (my son fries although i also gave him his own roaster)

i wash and dry the turkey rub it with butter , salt and pepper and cook it until done by a meat thermometer, with the pot doing the basting------------and then add my dressing to the drippings in the pot and cook it , stirring often

this frees your oven for pies, cakes , rolls and other things and doesn't overheat the house --------because here on the gulf coast in texas we are still using the a/c a lot of years

like the bags and crock pot the skin doesn't brown ------------but i've never missed that
