My Mom didn't really like to cook. So while she would show us the basics & answer questions, she was happiest when somone ELSE did the cooking.

When I was very young baking cookies with her. I have a lot of memories of baking and cooking with my grandmother (my mother's mother).

My Mother would always have a little pie dough leftover or a little extra bread dough and she would help me make a little pie in a custard cup or braid the extra bread dough into my own little loaf of bread.There was always the mixer bowl and beaters with a little extra frosting that my brother and I were always allowed to lick clean.I really think that is how I learned to bake because of waiting anxiously for the bowl or beaters,so I could sample her frosting.I miss her so much! Thanks for the lessons mom!

I think my favorite baking moment with my mom was the year we made a birthday cake for my dad. We kept asking him what kind he wanted and he joked that he wanted a green cake with orange frosting. Well, with the help of a little food coloring, we gave him just what he wanted. Boy did we laugh when we were making that cake.

My Mom's claim-to-fame were her pies - any flavor. Her crust, made with lard, were always flaky. I had her show me how to make the crust many times, but I can't get it as flaky as hers. Now I just use frozen crusts from Trader Joes. No one knows they're not my made-from-scratch crusts. lol

My Mom loved to bake and try new recipes. She got a new recipe for beer cake. All 4 of us girls didn't
want beer in the cake. She made the cake and it was a awesome choc. cake and you couldn't taste
the beer in the cake. I really miss her!!

My Mom was an excellent pie maker. Her crusts were so flaky and yummy! I would help her with rolling the crust, and when she had a few scraps left over she would let me roll them out and put cinnamon and sugar on them and bake them alongside the pie.

My Mom was an excellent cook. We all loved her apple pie among other wonderful recipes. One day, our dog, Queenie, who never did anything naughty, decided that she like Mom's pie too and ate the cooling pie right off the table. Talk about hang-dog look when she got caught!!!

I remeber my Mom baking apple pies from the Transparent Green apples from the tree n our backyard, I also had a swing hanging from that tree,

My memory is not so much of baking but cooking traditional tamales. What a lot of work oh but so worth it. The entire family would sit around the kitchen and make them. The house was filled with the great smells and I would go to bed with a stomach ache due to over eating.........the best!

My mother passed in 1985, but I remember when I was home from college one summer ( majoring in Home Ec.) we found a recipe for Black Bottom Rum Pie in the newspaper. After trying it ( it was a lot of work) we decided we could improve on the recipe. To this day, that pie is a favorite in our family, and the only recipe that I do not give out unless you are related to me.( all my mother's grand children have the recipe as well as cousins, and of course great grand children).

My Mom loved to bake and she was the best. Any pie dough that was left over, she would put in a little pie tin, sprinkle it with Cinn., sugar, top it with a pat of butter and she would bake it. That was my special treat! She just made everything complete!

Gee how I miss her!
