Memorial weekend is here and I look forward to the three days off. Doing work inside/outside the house weather providing, trip to Grandma's house, baking. Planned a nice red/white/blue dessert item for each day then disappointed at stores for hiking blueberry price up. Frozen not the same.

We'll cook out all weekend,steaks,baked potatos,salad.Burgers,dogs,mac and potato salad,calico beans,water melon and what ever else I come up with.I hope that everyone has a safe and happy holiday.

I'll be giving special thoughts of gratitude to all the men and women who gave their lives in service to our amazing country. I will also be thinking of my son in the Navy and counting down the days when I will next see him...12!!!

Oh, and I'll be putting some chicken and hamburgers on the grill for hubby and me!

Besides being in the Air Force Reserves my husband works at a hospital for his civilian job. Hospitals are notoriously open 24/7/365 (a good thing

) and do not give any paid holidays. Any hoo....Memorial Day will be just like any other Monday....except I will pause many more moments and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. God Bless America land that I love! ♥

today my son and dil are hosting a bd party for her grand niece-----------i've been told her nephew is providing ribs and hot dogs at 2 pm------------my dil has a large family and they get asked to do this several times a year because they have 2 acres---swimming pool-------with a safe track at back for the kids to ride their 4-wheelers--------boats and fishing gear-------nearby stocked pond (bass) ,etc.-------------3 4-wheelers the adults like to ride down to the nearby river and muddy up

then either sunday or monday----------they're cooking a brisket for just us

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

I, too, will be pausing throughout the day to remember the price paid and being paid now for our freedom. When we are able, we go down to the beach to welcome the Wounded Warriors and to thank them personally. They are brought at various times throughout the year from Bethesda and previously from Walter Reed, as well. These are the recovering military who are able to make the trip down. Unfortunately, the majority of them are not able to make the trip. There are numerous hotels at Myrtle Beach that donate the rooms for the miltary and often their spouses, sometimes even children, and the local restaurants are gracious in providing great food for the visitors, as well. The local attractions provide them free admission to the various shows and entertainment. The guests stay for a long weekend at no expense to them. It makes me proud of this area for having a heart for the wounded. These trips are sponsored by Scents for Soldiers. Those in the hospitals at Walter Reed - prior to its closing, and Bethesda were asked by the women who founded this event what they would like to help them during their hospital stay. They requested potpourrie (sp?) to take away the hospital scent. This is a wonderful cause, Scents for Soldiers. I believe they have a website where you can learn more about them.
