With a lot of recipes I often replace one nut for another in the recipe.  I like pecans much better than walnuts in most recipes.  But I will often use cashews, macadamia or sometimes a mix if I don't have or like a particular nut.  Sometimes I will use seasoned nuts, I make a chocolate bark with Smokehouse Almonds, it is fantastic.  I found a Pumpkin spiced almond that I used in my pumpkin bread in place of pecans.
So I would say feel free to replace a nut with one you can find or one you like.

Sharon - I received my hazlenuts and strawberries from www.nutsonline.com . Both were exceptional items -- much larger and nuch better than I expected.
And- of all things - a day after they were delivered I got an email from them asking is everything was OK and was I a happy shopper.

Elsa -- the nuts (and strawberries) I got from nutsonline were very, very good - exceptionally large.  But right before Christmas WalMart started to carry hazlenuts in the shell for much less money.  The nuts were much smaller but they sure looked good.

Nancy, in going through these posts I noticed you mentioned you don't have a Trader Joe's by you.  If you ever want something sent just let me know.  Flat rate box from the post office will take care of just about anything. Or I can go to the "Nut warehouse" by me more than willing to do some shopping for you.

Nikki -- you have a Nut Warehouse near you?? lol lol .... my idea of luxury -- I've been living in 'town' for two years now -- is that I have a regular WalMart Super Store right here and a GIANT WalMart in the neighboring town. lol lol lol.
I can't even imagine living in a city.

I LOVE TRADER JOES!  We have on very close to our house but hubby only permits me to go every 2-3 months.  I sneak over with my girl friend...LOL  What he dosen't know won't hurt him....LOL  I think he knows because the people who work their know me by my first name and greet me every time I walk through the door.  I told him that I just know everybody...RIGHT!

Nancy, our grocery store carries them in the produce section right along with pecans and walnuts.  The ones we can buy are shelled with the skins on.  The skins can be a bit stubborn to remove; I usually just give them a good rubbing with a clean old dishtowel.  They are especially flavorful when they are toasted.

Wow - Ruth Ann - You get to buy hazlenuts SHELLED?  I can currently (just because of holiday season) buy many nuts shelled and it's a real treat.  But the hazlenuts aren't shelled.
Of course,  the celophane bagged Fishers nuts are available all year.

I live in a really small town, Pop 711.  Fortunately they carry them at the Piggly Wiggly.

Hurry to the grocery store & stock up on the unshelled nuts, they should lower the price to get rid of then now that the baking season is over.  The nuts in shells should be seperated still, but as the amount goes down, the store will just mix them all in a bin & it will be harder to pick the ones you want.

Thanks Fran - that's a good idea.  What's your opinion/knowledge about FREEZING unshelled nuts?

They are also called Filberts.  In my grocery store, they are in packages along with walnuts and other nuts.
