Thank you Maxine .... When I was a child here in Missouri, PaPa (grandfather) always found filberts out in the woods ... we kids never did.  We found and collected black walnuts and hickory nuts.

In this rural area a farmers market is not easy to find.  I hope I can find a commercial or mail order source for them

Maxine - THANK YOU!!  I just went to www.nutsonline.com and they have EVERYTHING!!  I especially wanted the hazlenuts but I also found the dried strawberries I've been desperate for. Wow!!
And - of all things - their dried strawberries were a lot cheaper than my local grocery (who has dropped them anyway) even with the shipping charges.
I used the dried strawberries in cookies too.  They are marvelous!!

Around here, they are in the produce department along with walnuts, etc.  Hazelnuts are the ONLY nut that I DISLIKE!  I avoid any recipe that contains hazelnuts.

Where are you Darla?  I've looked in every grocery store in this area - eastern central Missouri - and found no hazlenuts,  Yes, Brazil nuts, pecans, walnuts, raw peanuts but no hazlenuts.

My uncle in Washington State picked hazelnuts in the yard.  Maybe this tree only grows in certain areas of the country.

Hazelnuts or filberts are a staple in german baking.  Unfortunately the ones I have seen this year are all so small that it would take a whole lot just to come up with a cup full!  Cracking them open without destroying the nut meat is a real pain but oh so worth it.  NutsOnLine.com seems to have to best prices if you can't find them in the stores.  They do have to be refridgerated once they're shelled to keep them from getting rancid.
