November 25 is our 50th wedding anniversary.  We plan on having steaks on the grill either Thanksgiving or the next day.  Our children come for Christmas so we have turkey at that time.

Congratulations!!  Fifty is a special time....most couples are not as lucky.....so be sure to enjoy your accomplishment.  Our 54th is coming very soon.....in January.

Also, congratulations to any and all of you having an anniversary.  Each one is precious, and all should be celebrated!!

First of all, I order a "fresh" turkey from the meat market.  Then my daughter & I plan our "go alongs".  We always have two homemade stuffings....I make one, she makes one, real mashed potatoes with homemade gravy, a vegetable dish; but not always the same one, we always have a cranberry dish, and always a fresh vetable tray with dips, and a pickle tray with various varieties of pickles.  Then comes the sweet stuff.....which usually consists of pumpkin pies, perhaps a tray of cupcakes, and always a cheesecake, usually New York style.  My, my.....I am hungry!!

It will be hubby and I for Thanksgiving Day.  So I am going to make a Turkey breast, Potato Filling, Cranberry Jelly, Copes Corn, Rolls and Corn Bread.

Dessert will be Pumpkin Whoopie Pies and Pumpkin cheesecake.

I pretty much have a set menu each year...mainly because my sons are traditionalists!!! The past few years I have been brining my turkey, and it turns out nice and juicy. I have real mashed potatoes with a little garlic added, and make gravy from the drippings. My stuffing recipe is from an elderly aunt, and the cranberry relish is from another aunt. We have to have green bean casserole with french fried onion rings, and candied yams. I make rolls and my sons insist on having sweet Hawaiian rolls as well. Dessert is always 1 pumpkin pie and the second pie will vary between apple, pecan or cherry. If we're having extra guests I'll add a few side dishes.

Congratulations to all who are having anniversaries.

I usually have the whole family(the ones in-state) here for Thanksgiving.  This year I will make a turkey breast, pork roast, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and green beans with almonds.  Also a relish tray and cranberry sauce. I'm sure there will probably be more added at the last minute lol.  For dessert it's usually pumpkin pie and cookies with coffee, if anybody has any room for more food.  With the over-abundance of apples, maybe I will also make an apple pie.

Susan - what is "Copes Corn"  ?

There will be a great Thanksgiving dinner at church the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  The actual Thursday when I do my own cooking it will be just me and the cats!

Nancy, brining a turkey is essentially applying kosher salt to the outside, putting the turkey in a big plastic bag, and letting it sit in the refrigerator for about 4 days. Some people add sugar and seasonings to the brine, but I just use salt. It makes the turkey juicy and adds more flavor. And the turkey does not taste too salty!

Nancy...

It comes in a can and it is a specialty corn.  Kinda sweet and like tannish in color.  I empty the can in a small pot, add a little brown sugar and butter.  It's very good.

Susan, they are sweet dough rolls made by King's Hawaiian company that I buy at our local grocery stores. My sons and husband love them, so I usually serve them for the holidays. They go well with ham too. Web site: http://www.kingshawaiian.com/products/rolls-12-pack.php

We plan/hope to enjoy dinner at thelocal luxury hotel.Hubby has been saving up all year for it
They have a buffet w/ all the traditional New England fare plus roast beef haddock; scalloped potatoes and his fave: a dessert bar featuring a multitude of pies, cakes& pastries; also fudge( several type). The coffee is good & refilled at your table. The meal  costs a week's grocery mony but it's a once a year thing. We feel greatful to be able to enjoy such  delicious luxury w/o  either of us having to do any prep work  or cleanupSmile
