Well it's time to start thinking about making my homemade sauerkraut. Now my very new adventure to be done by the holidays is wine making My dad and mom used to make it and now my brother does and he is going to teach me.He makes a very nice spice wine and a rice and green tea wine both are equally good.I'm going slow with this and I want my son to learn also.We are starting with a gallon of spice wine. This tastes like an apple cinnamon wine but there isn't an apple in it.It will be very nice for the holidays.Of course I'll be busy doing other things while the sauerkraut and wine ferment.I plan on doing a lot of baking and cooking.this holiday season as always.

Gale - I'll be stock piling COOKIES for the glorious holiday seasons ahead.
And I'll make lots of soup to somehow get into the freezer.
And I'll also be making lots of candy.
I wish things like divinity kept better.

I'm trying to think up ideas for Cristmas gifts.  Southern Living publishes a Christmas Cook book for Dillards that sells for $10 at Dillards.

I wish I could get a head start on the baking but I can't they get into it and I can't hide things like I used to.I learned long ago the sooner I start I don't get done until the last minute so they will wait until the last minute. It certainly isn't like they are deprived either I'm always cooking and baking something.I wonder how hard it would be to can your own soup that would free up valuable freezer space.

Nothing for Halloween.....no little ones here or in the neighborhood ("Old People's Condo Unit").  For Thanksgiving the kids will be here for dinner, which of course, we celebrate on Thanksgiving Day.  The "Southern Clan" goes to her parents for Christmas, so we celebrate Christmas on Friday.  The little one from Cinci will be 6 on the 6th of January.....it's usually a blizzard or worse at that time, so we celebrate his birthday on Saturday.  Then on the "real" Christmas, the ones from here will be here on Christmas Day.  By January, I will be sleeping late to "catch up"!

just look on the ball or kerr sites  ,
i got a free copy of Ball's Blue Book in a pkg of jars once, but it's available at walmart and other places

also county extension offices can help
but i bet if you just type in "home canning" you will get a lot of sites
my gm always canned everything

of course it requires a hot water canner so you would need help from your son

Gale, you're reading my mind! I spent yesterday flipping through recipes for my son's birthday dinner on Oct. 6. I actually found myself making notes of recipes to try or bake for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm not as adventurous as you with the sauerkraut and wine making. I stick to what I do best - baking and candy making!

Hi Nellie and Verlee,I did check out the canning but with veggies and meat you have to use a canning pressure cooker and I know that will never happen. But I have done something else to speed up the process.I started making up quart jars of my own soup starter, all dry ingredients. When you have all your ingredients out why not assemble this all at one time. Then when you want to make soup you just dump it into a pot or slow cooker,I use dry soup base,so I add water and the meat and any veggies I want to add.Turn on the pot and forget about it.I did get a great deal on Boost which is a concentrated broth so I 'll pack those into the jars too.I got the idea when I was making up gifts in a jar.Wash your jars after use and they are ready for the next batch. This could be done with just about anything including baking. To save room if that is an issue they could be labeled and packed into storage bags.I did this with chili spices and beer bread too.I have a case of quart jars waiting to be filled. They make a nice little gift for an unexpected visitor during the holidays.just attach directions.

No plans for Halloween UndecidedWeused  to get over 200  costumed kids stop by& we spent a week's grocery budget n pkg. candies.I once baked cookies & cpcakes&made  candy apples; but fear made those no longer acceptable to the kids(parents warnings.
Now all my neighbors( 30 in our building) no longer  give out anything.
Ourbuildingis kept locke 7 olyourown neighbor kids comearound w/parents& accept our homemadegoodies (parents too) w/pleasure.
Those of us older folks enjoyed making spider web cupcakes, candy corn topped homemade fudge, etc & have no desire to give out  pre-packaged  candies.Frown

I am getting all the non-perishables gathered for Thanksgiving.  In a few weeks I will start looking for my turkey (22-25lbs).  Right after Thanksgiving I will be gearing up for Christmas baking, candy making and Christmas Eve dinner (we have something simple like homemade chicken soup on Christmas Day so this old girl can take it easy). My husband works both Thanksgiving (I miss my sous chef in the morning especially on Thanksgiving!!) and Christmas so I like to take it easy on Christmas Day.

Once I return home from vacation I will be stockpiling staples for the Thanksgiving Feast. Love to bake all the pies, pumpkin, mincemeat, and of course, apple. I will be looking for some new vegetable recipes and will enjoy having family and friends eating and sharing the holiday.

We'll be visiting our daughter, son-in-law and grands in AZ the week before Thanksgiving to avoid the airline stampede over Thanksgiving.  Once home, I plan to begin baking and freezing cookies, cakes and maybe even some pies.

The Chicago gang is coming here, along with the PA daughter for the week between Christmas and New Years so I need to have plenty of cookies made ahead.

Definitely will make raisin filled cookies, one of their all time favorites.

Will definitely make some soup and I do freeze my beef barley soup.  The slow cooker will come in handy for a week of evening meals, since we'll be on the go during the days.

Special holidays can be very different ......... Several days ago a wonderful neighbor was heading out for a long, long trip.  She stopped in front of my house to wave 'bye and I ran out with bags of sweet 'n spicy pecans and peanut brittle for her to eat on the trip.
This morning she was home and stopped by on her way to work to tell me Thanks, that the sweet treats and kind thoughts made her trip much faster and easier.
