Flaky pie Crust
Share your holiday tips
My mother was always awesome at making flaky pie crusts from scratch. I have tried her recipe and cant get it right. I mean flaky. Any ideas?

From all the comments posted it appears that a lot of the bakers do use more shortening and say that the cold ingredients make the crust flaky. I never heard of using vinegar, but may use this sometime in the future as an experiment.

There was a lady that lived next door to us when I was growing up and she worked in a bakery.She brought my Mom an apple pie and the crust was unbelieveable So flakey and light.She said what ever amt of fat that was used she used half butter and half lard.I haven't seen lard in the store for years,I wonder if they still carry it? I know from a health stand point thats not a good choice but it sure tastes good.I guess if you don't make it this way all the and only on holidays maybe not too bad,everything in moderation.

My mom made the most AWESOME!! flakey pie crusts.. now I only use her recipe.

Bake at 400 degrees... Makes enough for 2 single crusts.

3 c. flour
1 c. lard or Crisco shortening
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 egg
5 Tbl. Cold water
1 tsp. vinegar

Sift flour & salt.  Cut in the lard.  Beat egg with water and vinegar.  Sprinkle over dry ingredients.  Mix with a fork and let stand for 10 min. before rolling out..

This crust turns out every time and is flakey... Mom knew how to please!!

Jill & Susan, that is the one I use and can even make chicken pot pies out of it......Really flaky
