Yes.  6 ounces of semi sweet chips would be the same as 6 ounces of semi sweet squares.
To make it melt easier I would break it up or grate it before trying to melt it just to make it easier and faster.  Before it completely melts remove from double boiler and stir until smooth.  (I just like the use of a double boiler or a bowl in/on a pan of simmering water rather than the microwave. I find it easier to watch and control.)
Got it reversed but answer is the same you can use chips in place of squares.

I agree with Nikki.  Its the Bakers Chocolate that you need to add a little shortening
