Cans with no lables

At my bridal shower some 40 plus years ago they presented me with a box of cans with no labels. The challenge was to make dinner out of what I opened up for my new husband. Well I have to tell you the only thing I threw out was a can that looked like cat food. It was suppose to be tuna but I wasn't going to serve my husband anything that was questionable. I think that with codes on the cans today a new bride could get the information she would need to find out what was in the cans. I didn't like it then and I still think it kind of mean to have a new bride go through something like that. I would much rather give her a book of recipes that I collected from each guest. That way she can decide if she wants to make for dinner. What do you think?

that sounds so mean.not knowing what you are opening.i am with you give cook books or a basket with pasta sauce . and cheese.

Who thought up that brilliant idea? It is good for someone to learn how to cook with things on hand, but a little too chancy for my tast.

Oh my, Elsa! I'd never heard of anything like that being done! Does sound kind of mean to do something like that to a new bride! I think the cookbook and recipe ideas would be a lot nicer for a new bride. Sounds like you made the most of the situation though! Good for you!

With the number of people with allergies I can't imagine doing that to someone.
I have always liked the idea of giving cookbooks. I think the best ones are the books put together by family members that contain "old" family favorites.

I remember several years ago I attended a bridal shower and everyone, and I do mean everyone, brought gifts that I thought were more wedding gifts, crystal, place settings, china and the like. Here I am with a "basket" I had put together, a huge wicker hamper filled with cleaning supplies, gloves, broom, mop, and some towels. This girl never had an apartment so I figured she would need all this stuff. I felt so "out of it" as she was opening all the other gifts.
Stick with the cookbooks, they are always welcomed.

Wow Elsa, somebody had a mean streak! Sounds like you bested them at that game. I haven't been to a bridal shower in years but I would absolutely do what Nikki did if I knew the bride had never had an apartment of her own before. Seems like most of the friends probably got what was on the list wherever. At least what you got, Nikki, is something useful that won't be put away on a shelf in the closet. I would have welcomed a "basket" of things I could use over the crystal vase that's still in the box after 30 years.

Wow Elsa - that's just plain AWFUL...... Why would anyone have fun doing something like that? Didn't any of the guests see what a sad thing that was and give you a REAL gift .... even if that gift cost as little as a can of food?
I'm sorry that happened to you on your wedding even if it was many years ago.

It was my husband's side of the family who had a weird sense of humor....It really backfired on them as only 5 years later I opened my bakery. Now who's laughing!!!!!

I am getting married in April and if anyone walks through the door with a box full of cans at my bridal shower, I will politely ask them to leave. Just playin'!

I think it is a rather neat and comical idea - props to you for sticking to the challenge but I don't think I would be able to do it. I have a hard time cooking out of a can as it is. I like everything as fresh as possible.

I certainly agree with the other ladies here, cookbooks are wonderful. I hope to get many!

I've never heard of it either. I like the cookbook idea. In fact several years ago when my nephew got married and they had a shower for his future wife they did a cookbook. When they sent out the invitations, they asked each person to write out a recipe on a card they sent and mail it back to one of the individuals giving the shower. They typed up all the recipes and each person attending the shower, in addition to the bride to be, received a copy of the recipes. I still have mine. I think it was a neat idea.

Back then, there were not as many canned goods as there are now, can you imagine getting some of the odd things that you find in the store now & not even knowing what you were looking at. I see cans with the photo & name & wonder what the heck does one do with it.

I can't imagine giving someone a box of cans with no labels. Even if it was a joke, I still don't like it. I probably would have thrown most of them out. Or fed them to the dog or cat - if I had one. You were braver than me to even try to use them. But the other ideas - like a basket of useful items or a cookbook - I would be tickled pink with either of those. Even some dishtowls or small gagets and utensils would be welcome.
I have seen some things I thought were clever for shower gifts. Poeple who are good with crafts take placemats and matching napkins and make a "cake" out of them. They can be a decoration or centerpeice for the party and then used later. There are similar things for babies - they use a baby blanket and socks to make "flower" decorations. I usually buy something already made. I am not terribly artistic.
