Use coupons, layer up, turn the heat down, do not waste power/water. Plan your trips. Plant a small garden. Think before you spend.

Hi Maxine.  You hit the nail right on the head!

I'm back.  Not weak any longer!  Not sure of some medical issues I have, but trying to get to the bottom of it all and much more able to, at least, function properly.  I'ts a big relief to feel better.

I use coupons too, but not many for fruits, veggies.  My printer is not attached to this lap top, so I can 't print coupons as I would like to.

I saw on TV that Kroger's is changing their policy on coupon redemption.  Did anyone see that?  I guess that some people have used so many coupons for one item that Krogers has taken a loss.  Or they say they have??   Other stores will probably follow Kroger's lead to save themselves money.  I am not sure who has Kroger stores.  They are in Indiana.

I'm glad to be back.  I tried to get on last week, but the forums were in ANOTHER LANGUAGE with different peoples names.   I had to contact VBB to see what was going on and why I could not see THESE community forums.  IT WAS SO STRANGE.

DiAnne,   Welcome Back!!  I think you were the one I talked to about Shipsewana. I went down
there in Sept.  The E & S Store is just south of the flea market. They have enlarged it and have
nice wide aisles. They also have fudge counter and ice cream counter in the store. Awesome
Store!!  So glad you are feeling better!!

This 'forum' was started in March, and 7 months later nothing has improved in California. If anything, it's gotten worse...cost of food, gas, electricity...and now our property tax bill arrived with more increases.

hI aANGELA ;unfortunately congress won t  think of us( their BOSSES)They work forthemselves( an their bank accounts)
I plan to layoff    most of them  in the NEXT ELECTIONYellI'l let my vote tell them WHATI THINK ofFTHE JOB THEY'VE BEEN DOING. Phone calls to their offices get me a form letter thanking me for my opinion Frown

the struggling of their constituents and not be so involved in getting what is good for themselves. It is time for all of us Americans to band together and stop the runaway politicians! Eating meatless meals is good for our health. My dad lived to 96 and was a big vegetable eater and worked hard physically to supply his family with the necessary things to sustain life. If everything is going to be so expensive, including non-meat products, what can we do but remember those who make laws, etc. that work for the people in 2012!

Hubby&I go meatless at least 3 days a week.On the remaingdays we eat meat at no more than one meal a day DAY & then onl y enough for  our body's needs[ 3 oz for him] &  for myself; less  w/ the addition ion of legumes ; whole grains & lots of veggies. Our city has a lottery where the winner gets to use  a sma l piece of city owned land to plant their own veggie garden. There are many old  smaller homes & apartments w/o land for growing crops in our city  so this is a wonderful;& thoughtful idea. we have  2 small porches/patios & can fit a few pots/boxes for veggies BUTour condo ruless forbid growing veggies. One neighbor out of 90 units is growing tomatoes  &  peppers anyway.   f the board tries to fine him; I hope he wins...The same guy fought the rule against  sattelite TV dishes  &   won. Now instead of having to pay over$100 month for cable we pay ony about $50 for our dish & get many more program choices. We use the  extra   $$$$$$$$$ for luxuries like lunch out(lunch specal prices & take advantage of Sr discounts & coupons. We share one meal & rarely finish it, in resturants. I use doggie bag items to make other meals  at home. Last week  I turned theFrench bread ourwaitress packed( we couldn't eat all they provide & they cannot serve it to someone else ) I    topped it w/ pasa sauce, veggies & low fat cheese...a short time in the broiler= PIZZA.
Served w/ a salad OR veggie soup " IT'S A MEAL"Money mouth; ALMOST AS GOOD & EASY  AS EATING OUT AGAIN!WinkMoney mouth

Verlee,  Nothing has improved CA and it is worse.  Gas in San Diego is $3.83 a gal.
Cost of food, natural gas and electric have all gone up!  Our property tax is higher too.
Hubby was saying a few choice words about it!!!! Our gas prices for our cars are
really high but I know they are higher in Los Angeles!!

We have a collection of food once a month at church and it is no wonder that the amount of food collected is less than what used to be contributed. It is difficult to find the money to contribute food to pantries when on a fixed income and trying to keep afloat, but we must remember that there are others in a more difficult bind and they may have little ones that need their nutrition. With Thanksgiving around the corner we will be collecting non-perishable food and gift cards for turkeys to feed over 150 families.

All of this negative news really makes me glad that I grew up in an era where the family garden was important and all of the fresh vegetables were grown at home.  I remember complaining about picking vegetables in the hot summer sun. but no more.  I am now grateful that I know how to plow with a mule, milk a cow, churn butter, gather eggs, and can vegetables.  Bring it on - my family won't starve if the world goes dark.  But I would miss electricity.  By the way, I am only 44 and not ancient as my students think because I can do these things!

I fail to see how stores can lose money on coupons as they are reimbursed by the manufacturer.  Of course if they double the coupon the store takes the hit on the doubling part.

I think they are trying to trick us by making things just a little smaller hoping we won't notice.  The 1/2 gallon of ice cream has shrunk to only 1 1/2 quarts in some brands.  However we have a local brand that is still a real 1/2 gallon.

Judy - that's another thing that really annoys me - sizes ....... say I'm working with a recipe that calls for 1 (16 oz)  can of tomatoes.  The can I bought is 14 oz.  Should I add 2 oz from another can, should I forget about it, should I add a bit of water?   g-r-r-r-r-r-r

GRANA  here;
If our  politicans had to live on a "budget"& shop for food to feed their families, they might have an idea of what we're all up against these days. But they eat most meals away from home( there's a dining room for Senators. & for congrssional peope.I don't know whatbor even if they pay for meals but it keeps them "in the dark  about  the realities of life for the rest of us.
In anycase their annual incomes are so much higher than the typical/averageAmeican's income that they really cannot be expected to understand the prolems we ( w/ more  typical incomes are up against.
I've eard more than one person suggest that we could   cut back on theNatonal debt , easily by cutting the alaries of of these " representatives of the people"

I purchased vegetable seeds when they arrived in January at Lowes and Home Depot. I planted the seeds and my plants are growing in plastic containers. Gas for the car, water for the home, the electric bill, and oil for the furnace have risen. I use coupons for groceries, auto repairs, and other supplies.

Price increases are sad surprises.  Plan outings and errands more efficiently and try not to waste anything.
