GRANA here; This is the time of year fresh pears are in season & available at more reasonable prices ( $.79# this week for choice of 3 varieties) Unfortunately they arrive & are sold as hard as rocks. Iguess this method allows more fruit to be shipped w/o arriving bruised & unapealing . An easy way to get them ready to eat before springtime;Stone fruit( peaches, plums , apricots) can be placed w/ a few apples into a paper bag.....tightly roll the top of the bag, to close , Let it sit on the counter & the fruit will ripen a lot faster .In a cool room, they will usually be eady to wash & eat in 3 days. In a wamer room 2 days might be enough time. I have tried avocados & bananas and it worked w/ them too.The only real problem is that you cannot see inside the closed bag & you might forget to check by the time the fruit is ripened enough to eat; leadng to over-ripe spoiled fruit.Just make sure you heck daily & you ll find you have ripe fresh fruit faster than than you expected or even thought possible.Your COST: only f few minutes a day; nothing extra to buy; you pobably already have a paper bag & few apples in your home.As an experiment;I put one stone-hard pear in a aper bag & left 2 out on the counter. In 2 days, the bagged pears are almost ripe the other two are stil stone-hard & inedible......in only one or two more days they wil be fuly ripe & juicy, absolutely delicious alone or w/ cokies ford essertA good appetizer:slice ripe pears thinly, lenthwise on a small plate ( sprinkle w/ crumbed blue cheese& toasted chopped pecans...Drizzl w/ dresing choice( French or honey typeserve before a grilled or roast meat poultry meal;aslmost like beginning w/ dessert
