Olive Oil vs Vegetable Oil

Okay, time to give me your opinion. At Trader Joe's the other day I got into a conversation with 2 other women about using olive oil in baking items instead of vegetable oil. They both said they have switched to olive oil because it is more healthy, and they swear you can't taste the difference in the baking items.

What do you all think?

Verlee,  I have not switched to olive oil.  I use it with cooking but not with baking.  I don't
even like the sound of it! Yuk!!!  I haven't seen any baking recipes with olive oil in them
either.  I would have to taste test before doing it!! I think there would have to be a lot of
the VBB's saying it was ok before I would try it.

I use olive oil in just about everything.  I like it because it is heart healthy.

I've never tried that. Tongue out  I don't like olive oil so I can't  even imagine it.
Maybe it's something I should at least try.

when we have stir fry thats the oil that we cook with because it is healthy for us.

I use Cannola oil more than Olive oil.    I think Olive oil gives too strong a flavor for me.

I always use olive oil for everything.  I use it in baking, too.  Don't taste any difference.  I don't use any other kind of oil.

I never tried olive oil in baking, but when I am cooking, I use half olive oil and half Veg. oil.  I think the olive oil makes the food take on a better taste.

Well, based on these responses, I am going to give olive oil a try in my baked goods. My son is getting ready to deploy in July and I'll be baking lots more for his goodie packages. Thanks for all your input, VBB-ers!!!

I love olive oil but never bake with it unless a recipe specifically calls for it.  I do cook with it all the time however!!

Wrong! There is a very different taste and texture. Maybe using the light olive oil is ok, but canola oil is just as healthy.

It really depends on the olive oil.  A number of brands are labeled as being very light and almost fruity.  I would not use the same type that I would for frying or sauteing.  I would agree that they are right about it being more healthful.  A last note, when many of my cookbooks were written (I've have some that I've used the entire 40 years I've been married), the choice of ingredients were so different.  In 1971 I never heard of balsamic vinegar, for example.  If all my cookbooks were being written now, I suspect I would find lots of changes - in ingredients, cooking techniques, etc.

always use olive oil makes a different pie crust i have a mix inpan and press dough with olive oil.

I make my fried chicken and it is fried in olive oil and it tasted better.
