I am making some home made vegetable soup with  a ham base  can of tomatoes , potatoes , carrots , corn green beans , rice and macaroni noodles,
a piece of celery stalk , a couple of dashes of salt and pepper . Something I hadn't thought of making in a long time  . Mom use to
do  it I suddenly realized we hadn't had any homemade vegetable soup in a several years .  I like  the beef vegatable   better , but
I didn't  have a beef bone , and usually when you do  buy a  soup bone at the super market there is no meat on it .
So I did the next best thing I  had bough a slice of ham it had  a bone it so I used  that hambone  to make the vegetable soup
with .

Time to haul out the Crock Pot/slow cooker, throw everything in to suit your taste, and let it simmer away.  A good loaf of bread, homemade or French bread.  You don't need much else to make a hot, tasty meal.  Clean up?  I use the liners that they have especially for slow cookers, so easy.

I usually make soups during the winter (my favorite is turkey or chicken carcass soup), but it's been so warm here this year that making soup just doesn't seem right.  It's not like we haven't had cold and snow- it's just been in the 50's way too much this year so far.

After having home made soup the canned stuff just doesn't cut it.  Tastes watery not much flavor and missing all sorts of ingredients.
For years I have saved backs, wings and some of the legs in bags for soup.  When I make the soup I toss the frozen stuff into my pressure cooker and start the broth that way.  I will add other chicken to the soup later.  Ham and bean same thing the bone goes into the freezer and I know a wonderful soup awaits. I have some beef in the freezer now waiting to be made into a nice hearty thick Beef Barley. That with a loaf of homemade bread and you have a meal that will keep you filled and warm all day.Soup is such a heart warming, satisfying meal you just can't go wrong.

I used to take the kids to the store and turn them loose in the produce section and tell them to find a vegetable that they have never seen before and we would try it in soup.  We found out that my stepson loved "albino  carrots", known to the rest of the world as parsnips, in soup.  It was always fun to take a trip to the store with a soup in mind.

Yesterday I got the ham bone and meat attached that was our New Years Day, out of the freezer and
made Split Pea Soup and ham.  I add cans of chicken broth for the fluid and onion, garlic, celery, carrots,
pepper, and cumin.  It was awesome!!!  I have a 8 quart cockpot that I used.

I, too, make soup in my crockpot.  We like soup, especially on a cold winter snowy day like we have been having in New Jersey.

Given a run of cold snowy days soup is a great option simply because it is a great way to use up stuff that sits in the freezer or pantry.  If you can't get out to get supplies you use what you have on hand.

The next time you make any kind of a soup, brown the bones in the oven before adding to the soup.It adds a richer flavor.I also do this when I make my pork neck bone spagetti sauce.

aahhhhhh - home made soup.  Probably the best meal you can have on a cold winter day.
I make big pots full ... put the leftovers into freezer zip lock bags and lay them flat in the freezer.
They don't take up much space and thaw so quickly.
I LOVE home made soup..... home made chili too.

One of my favorite soups is Michael Chiarello's Roasted Butternut Squash Soup.   The other favorite is Ina Garten's Mexican Chicken Soup.  Both recipies can be found on the Food Channel's website.  Delicious!!

Like Millie B. I make a (boneless) beef roast & 2 days later have hot beef sandwiches, I then cut the rest of the (planover) leftover roast into bite size pieces & freeze for a stew, what little stew is left, I make soup out of. I have been doing this for over 40 years & with the boneless roast, I do not have any waste.
It also makes me feel good using tomatoes that I grew & canned & in the past I have grown & canned carrots & green beans.

Maybe if you made your own soup, you would like it. Try it one day, just put what you like in a pot with beef or chicken broth & then season to taste.
Heck, you can even open up a can of tomato soup & add stuff, you might surprise yourself Laughing
