Like they say soup is good food.You retain all the good vitamins and minerals and is a whole lot tastier than swallowing vitamin tablets.How could you not like soup?

Home made soup sounds soooooooo good right now. I hope I can find a bag in the freezer.
I know there's chili and spaghetti. I'm going to have to dig for soup.

That sounds good. We have 4 labs and when we buy bones for them I end up makes a slow cooked stock, several days, out of them - gotta cook the bones anyway - with onion, carrots and celery. Strain the stock and give them to the dogs, carefully so as not to loose a finger or hand. If not wounded I can start making the soup. If we don't have any left over roast beef, we just buy a cheap cut of meat, brown it and then add to the stock with new carrots, celery and onion. Season to taste. Again I let it cook for a day or so to tenderize the meat. A couple of hours before serving I add a bag of barley and end up making a beef barley soup. Several days of soup and it is so much better than anything you can buy. This sounds so good right now as i look out watching it snow and blow. Wish I had some right now! A wrm hearty soup is hard to beat. It is a lot of work and takes a long time to make, but the results are so worth the trouble.

Paul, next time you pick up some of the bones, roast them until they are brown and there is a bit of brown drippings in the pan. Then put it all in a pot and let it simmer for a few hours. Refrigerate and remove the fat that comes to the top. I think you will get more flavor from the bones.
The dogs will love the roasted flavor as well.
I think there are so many people doing this that what used to be inexpensive cuts are getting more expensive. Things like Ox Tails, shank cuts and even the bones used to be almost give a way items.

I de-glaze my pan to get every bit of that good stuff for my soup! John make sure your pups stay away from the onions as the damage their immune systems. Other than that they are some lucky pups!

I love homemade chicken soup. When the store has bone-in chicken breast on sale I will buy a few, cut off the breast part for later use and just use the bones(with a little meat on them) to make the soup. Whatever vegetables I have on hand go in the pot. Lots of garlic and onion too.

When I have a ham bone, I usually make bean soup. Northern beans are great for this soup. Yummy, makes me want to go cook a pot of soup now lol.

Hi Nikki, I do roast the bones at times. Sometimes I am just to lazy and it is so easy to huck them into a stock pot and walk away. lol I agree roasting does add a very nice flavor. I don't think one can ruin a bone for a dog. Bones are expensive these days, heck everything is expensive these days. I guesss they butchers figured that there is a market for them. Bummer for us folk though.

My family hunts and we process all of our own meat. When we make burger or sausage we use to buy beef suet. Suet is now as expensive as the cheap burger is when it is on sale. We have started buying the burger to add, that cheap stuff has lots of fat in it, and it extrends the meat we are processing. And our current administration says there is no inflation that affects use poor folks that are on SS so no help for us. I am glad gas prices are not included in the inflation calculations. sry for getting off subject. lol

Roasting does help. :-)

I do clean the bones off very well before giving them to the dogs. Yeah onion is not good for them. They are so funny to watch when they get them. One of the dogs will chew off all of the good stuff on the outside then will take it into the breezeway and start dropping onto the concrete over and over until it breaks in half and she can get to the marrow. So there are these 8" leg bones broken in half all over the place. lol

I have to go into the neighboring town's "fancy" grocery store to get any soup bones and pay more for those things than I would for chuck roast right here at Walmart.
But I'm sold on the stock I get from the fancy bones .... it's the best.

I love the ham bone soup recipe I have but I've never seen a chunk of ham with a bone. I wonder why not.

Nancy, if you have a "mom and pop" restaurant in your area the sells the breakfasts offering "ham off the bone" they will often sell the ham bone, or possibly give it away. They go through the hams pretty fast so it should be a pretty good bone to use.
Other than that sometimes you can get a slice of ham, often called a Ham Steak in the meat dept. Small bone just a little round one, not much to add a lot of flavor.

Nikki - the ham I've been using for my soup is one of those bone-in "ham steaks" .... It's delicious ham even without the bone.
Because of the lack of flavor I use canned chicken stock instead of water.
I think it's great soup ..... but I'm easy. I love just about all soup!

A great soup to fix after a STEAK dinner. The leftover meat and bone flavors extremely well from the griddle or grill. Steak bone vegetable soup Marylin used to call it. Yummm. Sure do miss it and her.

Hey Paul leave them pups a little meat on them bones they deserve it after all the work they do to get the bone broke to get the marrow! I can see that in my minds eye. A real funniest home video clip!
