Hi ANGELA F ; GRANA   here; I too had muscle pan& brain fade issuesw/ statin drugs.One dr switchedme off statins to TIMED RELEASE NIACIN  tablets & they lowered my cholesterol tilI I turned65+ yo.Weight loss & exercise were suggested but being partially rlyzed &  confined to a wheelchair  makes that difficult/ nearlyimpiossible  for me!!!!!!!!!! sugars( all types   increse trygliceride levels, also bad.( stil working on that area ) I've cut way down on those; increased fiber & I take fish oil w/omega  3 epa & dha My newer doc suggested co enzyme Q10  gel capsules 150 mg  daily; It's 's pricey & not covered by insurance but  it is lowering my cholesterol gradually w/o bad side efects! ; if weight loss& daily exercise are  possible, foryou  givethat atry first;If not ask your dr   about & give  co Q 10  a ry.I get mine mail orderr( often @t buy 2 get 3 free I still take statins but  have much less muscle  pain & find my brain fade less of a problem than before C o enzymeQ10 ....My cholesterol is down  from 275 to 215 in one year .My dr wants it  BELOW 205 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Ann I do use butter in my cooking but only for flavor along with canola oil.One thing that has helped me to lower my cholesterol is Smart Balance margarine.It lowers the bad cholesterol and raises the good one.Just a thought it did help me.My bad Cholesterol 15 years ago was 384 and I had a heart attack,high cholesterol runs in my family.Now it is down to 116.My Dr.'s are just so happy about this I was on Lipitor and I had horrible leg pain,I switched to Simvastatin and have had great results.Keep up the good work Ann.You'll lower it even more.

My cholesterol is well under 200 due to a small dose of a statin.  It never was real high....maybe 215.  However, I read the other day that a regular "dose" of dark chocolate may reduce the need for statins.  Now Nancy, I'm sure you and others could really get into that regimen!!  I certainly could!!  I'm not sure my cardiologist would agree.

I have to go in for a "fasting" blood test tomorrow as I have an appointment with my cardiologist  right after Easter.  He always wants a recent test for his records.  I really don't mind doing it, but finding a time when the lab is not busy is the problem.  If one goes right when it opens at 7AM, all the people who need to go to work are there.  I also call it the "NO BREAKFAST CLUB".  I try to go after I take my walk at about 9AM.  It usually is a little slower then.  To keep my numbers down I walk 3.2 miles 5 times a week, and I usually ride my exercycle for 40 minutes right after lunch.  My HDL and LDL ratios are usually very good!!

Mine is high too.  My doctor suggested following a vegan diet, but I'm just not that disciplined.

I get my cholesterol checked when I donate blood or platelets.  I can go in the day before to have a fasting test done but I usually don't.  My cholesterol has been borderline but if the guidelines have changed I may no longer be borderline.  My doctor has not pushed me to go on a statin because my HDL is very high.  That may have changed as well since I am not exercising like I have in the past.  I will find out soon as I am a bit over due for my annual physical.

Did you ask the doctor if he/she follows the vegan diet?  I sure would lol.

My cholesterol has been high for a long time since it's hereditary.  The last doctor I had put me on statins.  When I had bad muscle aches from one, he said it couldn't possibly be from that.  But it went away after I stopped taking the med, hmmmmm.  Since he quit his practice I haven't been to see a doctor and I've never felt better.  Except for dental problems and a sinus infection I've been "doctor free" for over two years now lol.

However, I do watch what I eat and I've lost over 20 pounds along the way so I know I must be doing something right.  Doctors are great when necessary, but there is a reason they call it medical 'practice'.  lol

  GRANA   here; H i     ANGELA  F ; TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL:  TRY  weight loss;limit saturted fats & cholesteol in your diet.; eat apples, oatmeal take a fish oil supplement 1,000 mg up to  3 x a day

I definitely could use losing about 20 pounds. I do take COq10 and Omega 3. Don't eat fried foods and try to watch saturated fats. I use olive or canola oil, but the genes keep coming through. I can get the LDLs (bad cholesterol) down and have relatively high HDLs (good), but triglycerides are still high. Doctor had me stop statin for about 2 weeks to get my muscles back in shape and will be taking a lower dose of statin to start. I will let you know how it works. A little arthritis is not helping with pain management.

GRANA  here;
Igot some "BAD NEWS" TODAY!
 So manyof us are trying to lower our cholesterol & having a dificult time of it.A dr on TV saild that the average Ameican  consumes120+# of sugar each year...It's in obvious places( most pastry & desserts butalsoin the ess bvious( soups, pasta sauces,  cereals, canned fruit, bottled iced teas; specialty take-out coffees,even wholewheat bread Surprised making it moister & providing a more appealing flavor to the whole ewheat  something  manyfolks previously  disliked about whole wheat bread.

ecipe  food products, &  consume less sugar than we have been!
That's the bad news: limit cookies, cakes,pies;
OH MY!!!!!!!!!!Frown

Hi ANGELA;
GRANA  here;
I was told that sugars(in so many food products, raises triglercerides, ; mine are usually, pretty good 'cuz, I  iguess, I eat littlesgar(only what s natrurally in fresh fruit, andtheocasonalcokieor 1/4 cup of icecream.... HIGH LDL w/ low HDL  is thought to be a risk isk factor ;most beneficial is LOW LDL ; HIGH HDL ;  low tiglerides;LOW  total lipds,good weight, regular moderate exercise...I Ithink new studies are always offering  new theories.Good luck on restarting statins;  if they work;it's worth the negativesideeffects; if not ; too confusing to think about.Undecided
